The 1977 Paul Lewis Post-Biblical History Contest took
place on May 8th in Beth Yeshurun. Twenty-seven 9th-12th
graders from four synagogues in Houston, Dallas, and
Corpus Christi participated in this educational event. The
students all took a 100 question multiple-choice examina-
tion in the morning based upon the Classical Period in
Jewish History (538 B.C.E. to 425 C.E.). After a luncheon,
the eight high scorers’ names were announced. These stu-
dents were the finalists.
The oral finalist round was judged and moderated by
Dr. Morton Siegel, the Executive Director of the United
Synagogue of America. Each student sat behind an over-
head projector and wrote his answer to each of thirty
questions asked by Dr. Siegel. The answers were reflected
behind the students for the enthusiastic audience and the
scorers to see. The last part of the contest consisted of two
oral questions, chosen at random from a hatful of questions,
for each student. The scorers were Mr. Mitchell Barnett,
Mr. Emanuel Goldman, Dr. Daniel Musher, and Dr. Joshua
Weinstein.
