VARIETY CLUB
The Variety Club met in
the home of Mrs. Lynn
Flowers Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Mrs. Bill Tipton read a
poem "The Little Things" by-
Mary Dawson Hughes. The
hostess gave a prayer and di-
rected question and answer
games. Mrs. Charlie Let/, was
presented a gift from the
Club.
Eight members were pre-
sent.
The ladies called a meeting
for an all-day quitting Tues-
day Feb. 18. The next meet-
ing will he in the home of Mrs.
Katie Gerloff Feb. '25.
Brian Lot/, son of Mr, and
Mrs. Thomas Let/ of Graham,
underwent minor surgery at

Friday. He is the grandson of
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Let/,
and Mr. and Mrs. C. T.

Senate Bill Would
Exempt Taxes On
Water Systems
The hundreds of small rural
water companies set up on a
nonprofit base to provide wa-
ter for rural homes all over
Texas would be exempt from
taxation under a pair of pro-
posals by Senator Murray
Watson, Jr. of Mart.
SJR G is a proposal to let
th(> voters of Texas decide
whether they want to amend
the constitution to give the
nonprofit water supply com-
panies an exemption from tax-
es on their lines and water
systems. SR>1i would carry
the constitutional provision
into effect if it is voted.
Under a program of the
Farmers Home Administrat-
ion, hundreds of loans have
been made for construction of

Class Meeting
The Gleaners Sunday School
class of the First Baptist
Church inet Feb. 11 in the
home of Mrs. Lola Dodson for
their monthly meeting.
Mrs, Nadine Bryson gave
an interesting book review
on Sheldon's "In His Steps."
Refreshments were served

rather than creating water
districts which would have
boon exempt from property
taxes because they are govern-
mental agencies. They found
that organizing costs were
simpler, and it was not neces-
sary to have elections and
issue bonds.
But Watson said that in
some areas county tax asses-
sors are levying taxes on the
water systems.
Lt. Governor Ben Barnes
referred the proposed consti-
tutional amondmet to the
Senate Constitutional Amend-
ments Committee, and the en-
abling bill to the State Affairs
Committee.

ler of Haskell, announce the
birth of a daughter, Sonya
Lynn, born Feb. 12, in the
Haskell Memorial Hospital.
