NATION OF VALUE TO THE PEANUT INDUSTRY E XC SIVE TO M BERS (AT $3500 PER YEAR)
P tLISED WEEKLY BY THE NATIONAL PEANUT COUNC - CIRCLE B LDING * WASHINGTON 6, D. C.
Vol. 10, No. 7 February 13, 1959
RLCEIV[D
ONGRESSIONAL LUNCHEON MARCH 5 . . . . ar Congress is going to help
our industry celebrate National Peanut Week . . . . . Starting at 12 o'clock noon on
Thursday, March 5, we will serve an all-peanut buffet luncheon in the Speakers' Dining
Room at the C
Members of the House acting as sponsors for the luncheon are: Abbitt (Va.), Albert
(Okla.), Andrews (Ala.), Burleson (Texas), Cooley (N. C.), Forrester (Ga.) and Sikes
(Fla.) . . . . . Invitations are being sent to all Senators and Congressmen from the
peanut producing states and districts . . . . . All members of the Senate and House
Agriculture Committees are also being invited.
All members of the Council are invited although no one is urged to make a special trip
to Washington for that purpose . . . . . Any Council member will be most welcome if
you find it convenient . . . . . It will help if any member who wants to attend will
notify us so we will know how many to cook for.
NO PEANUT SAMPLES PLEASE . . . . . We are not asking our manufacturers to
send samples of their products for this Luncheon as in the past . . . . .
The popularity of the event makes it necessary to utilize all the space
and facilities of the Speakers' Dining Room for the luncheon itself . . . . .
That prevents us from putting on peanut product exhibits and distributing
gift packages.
While we are sorry that this is the case, it is highly doubtful that there
is any direct commercial advantage in providing these gifts and since it is
impractical to arrange it, we would appreciate it if all manufacturers would
refrain from sending products for this event.
What will produce better sales results, is to send some of your products in
connection with our TV King and Queen Show as mentioned below.
PETER LIND HAYES AND MARY HEALY WILL BE PEANUT WEEK KING AND QUEEN . . . . . These
two outstanding television stars have agreed to serve as King and Queen of Peanut
Week this year . . . . . The Peter Lind Hayes Show is ideally suited to this type of
publicity . . . . . It is broadcast five days a week over the ABC-TV network from
New York from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. . . . . . They will be crowned King and Queen
of National Peanut Week on their show on Monday, March 2nd.
What they will do and say about peanuts is now being worked out . . . . . As televi-
sion matures it is becoming more difficult each year to obtain such free plugs for
commercial products . . . . . The networks are no longer inclined to give free time
to such things and the sponsors of these big shows are of the same attitude.
