Hon. Truett Latimer
House of Representatives
State Capitol
Austin, Texas
Dear Truett,
Not long ago my folks sent me a cony of the "Reporter" for May 3d, which
contained a long story about you, your family and your legislative work.
My parents have heard me speak of you, and they knew that the article would
be of interest. Seeing the story reminded me that I have been intending
to drop you a line.
The "Reorter's" article was certainly very laudatory, and you are to be
congratulated. It seems that the Taylor County citizenry are mighty pleased
with their representative. In particular I admire the way you have stuck to
your guns in what you believe right in the constant wet vs. dry campaign.
Your position is certainly far from the popular one, you know. I recall
being in Austin in 1955 and hearing the Senate debate an increase in the
beer tax. The alternative, then as now, was beer tax or more gas tax.
It seemed to me that the position of the Senators opposing the beer tax
was very weak, but while I was sitting in the gallery the tax died.
As I mentioned above, I have been thinking that I would drop you a line
to tell you that it may not be too long before I see you down in Austin --
especially if these special sessions keen going. As this letter written on
"company time" will evidence, today is my last day at work with Pan American.
Tomorrow I am leaving Fort Worth to spend a week's vacation in Breckenridge.
A week from Monday, June 8th, I will register at the law school down at
Texas. Of course, you can imagine how I am looking forward to starting
law school.
Before starting to school, I am planning on stopping by to see Prof
Stephenson in Abilene. Good old Prof certainly did it up brown in recommend-
ing me to Texas for a scholarship, and I know it was thru his influence
that Dr. Reiff wrote a recommendation for me. It appears that my scholar-
ship didn't do too well this time, but the application will be reviewed
again next fall. Dean Stephenson certainly helps his former students,
doesn't he?
