be held on May 12. at 7 :00 p m in the
Wells ISD auditorium This banquet
will honor all Wells ISD athletic
members including high school,
junior high, and sixth grade who were
involved in track, baseball, basketball
and other sports
A Bar-B-Q supper will be served
Tickets for non-athletic members are
$2 50 and may be purchased from any
athletic student or Booster Club
member, or may be purchased at the

vote Tuesday afternoon a 1980-81 state
budget totaling around $20 7 billion
dollars
Rep Emmett H Whitehead of Rusk
reported that the Appropriations bill,
which passed by a vote of 88-54,
included no cuts in the approximately
$41 million dollar budget for Rusk

will open its summer baseball
program at 6 pm, Monday at the
baseball field
Opening ceremonies will include the

one hour for Pee Wee and Girls games

Annual May Festival Saturday from
10 a m to 5 p m at the Wells
Livestock Association show grounds
on Highway 69
Fun and games for all ages are
planned for the event Bingo will be
played and there will be pony rides for
the children Soft drinks, charcoal
grilled hamburgers and ice cream
will be offered for sale during the day
Flea market stalls will be located
around the show grounds The booths
will be rented for $5 for the day and
interested persons are invited to sell
any items which they might want to
offer
Drawing for a 10-speed bicycle and
lawnmower will be held at 4 pm
Cherokee County champion Irene
Ryan of Wells High School and 31
other North Texas county champions
will compete Saturday (May 5) in the
21st annual Dallas Morning News
Regional Spelling Bee
The competition will be televised
live beginning at 11 30 a m Saturday
on WFAA-TV. Channel 8. At stake will
be more than $2 000 in prizes and the
right to represent the Dallas region at
the National Spelling Bee. June 4-8 in
Washington, D C.
Irene, a 13-year-old eighth grader at
Wells High School, is the daughter of
Mr and Mrs James Ray Shelton of
Wells She is one of 90.000 fifth through
eighth grade students who participat-
ed in The Dallas News Spelling Bee
program at the classroom level.
The Dallas regional champion will
win an all-expense paid trip to Wash-
ington for himself and a sponsor as
guests of The Dallas News, a 30-vol-
ume set of the Encyclopedia Britan-
nica 3, a Zenith Allegro stereo system,
the American Heritage Dictionary of
Elementary School winners includ-
ed Dana Cooper, Mark Bynum and
Brad Dominy, first place team in
Picture Memory; Ken Cooper, second
and Stephen Dowling, third in Story
Telling
Also, Delinda Rozell, first and Ange-
la Moore, second in Spelling and Plain
Writing; Delinda Rosell. first and
Marv Warner, second. Ready Writing
and Robert Hall first and Michael
Brezina second in Number Sense

divisions include cakes, pies and

will be auctioned after the judging
Proceeds will be used for civic

David Wallace. AHS senior, was the
recipient of the Alto Herald All
Around Athlete Award, presented by
Whitehead Enterprises. Inc Wallace,
the son of Mr and Mrs S L Wallace,
has a number of athletic and
academic achievements. He bolds the
school record in the mile run with a
time of 4 48. which he set in his
sophomore year He has been to
Regional for two years in the mile
run. and Saturday, following the
Friday night banquet, he placed
seventh in the event at the Regional
Track Meet held in Kilgore
He has been a four year letterman in
football and received Honorable Men
tion. All District at the quarterback
position He is a member of the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes and
an outstanding player on the Yellow-
jacket baseball team He has been
very active in school activities and
has served as president of his class
and has held other offices throughout
his school year. He will graduate in
the top ten of his class with a 91 96
grade average Wallace also received
the “Brains and Brawn" award
Athletic Director Steve Cooper ser-
ved as master of ceremonies for the
banquet and presented two special
recognition awards The “We Believe
Award." for demonstration of deter-
mination and special effort went to
David Holcomb Holcomb, a senior
and son of Mr and Mrs Bobby
Holcomb, suffered a broken leg dur-
ing the Yellowjacket football season
and by giving extra effort placed third
in the mile run at the District Track
Meet
Coach Cooper announced the initia-
tion of the Robert P Brezina Outstan-
ding Athlete Award for an athlete who
gives a little extra in performance
The award is named in honor of the
Alto School Superintendent who will
be leaving employment of the School
District at the end of this school year
Coach Cooper asked Brezina to pre
sent the first award tn the recipient

superintendent for Rusk State
Hospital announced plans for the
twenty seventh annual Open House at
Rusk State Hospital Friday. May 4,
from 9 am until 4 p m In making the
announcement, Mr Kaufman
emphasized the importance of the
publics awareness of the hospital and
the services it provides citizens of
Texas
Planned activities for the one-day
event include awards presentation by
the Mental Health Association of
Tyler at 9 30 am. An all-patient
variety show at 10 a m and 2 p m and
tours from 9a m until4p.m
The hospital conducts a full life
support system by providirig bed and
board, education, training, health
care, recreation, and many other
services It operates 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, 365 days a year
One of eight such facilities in the
state, the hospital is currently the
largest, serving more than 900 in-
patients daily
Over 1600 employees provide care
and treatment on the specialized units
that include: the Admissions Unit,
Adult Psychiatric Units, Alcoholism
Treatment Unit, Fairweather
Program, Geriatric Rehabilitation
I nit. Medical Unit. Social Learning
Unit. Skyview Unit, and the Frederick
M Hedge Therapy and Wilderness
Campsite
Rusk State Hospital, a division of
the Texas Department of Mental
Health and Mental Retardation is
located one mile north of Rusk, off
U.S Highway 69 and serves 31
counties in the East Texas-Gulf Coast
Region, as well as the entire state for
commitments to the Maximum
Security Unit
