tury Isaiah Beck was born in Virginia.
Leaving there when a young man, he
' came to South Carolina, and married.
Of this marriage on the 18th of April,
1830, near Roads, South Caro'.nu, a
son was born, who was also named
Isaiah Beck. Also two girls, Dorcaa
nnd Fully, were his sisters. When
these children were barely grown, the
family moved from South Carolina to
Rabun county, Georgia. Here Isaiah
married a Miss Youngblood, when he

where Isaiah Beck had two lots of,
land. Isaiah built Hock's mill, which
was one of the first in that part of the
comity. They built a cabin just up the
creek from the mill, and lived there
for some five or six years, and then
built a home at the cross roads.
This was one hundred years ago. The
house stands there now, almost as it
was when built. The only house
standing, so far as I know, that Was
built so early. It should be preserved
for its history. It would be grand for
some historical society to take steps
to preserve it,
John Davis was born in Virginia
January 5, 1787, and came to Georgia
in 1790. He married Miss Lucy Ham
days nnd times when the neighbors so
gladly let me work for them for some
thing to live on. Their names will
ever live in my memory. But, alas,
they are not with us now. Peace be
to their memory. Mother a:.;l 1 strug-
gled on as best we could until the
fourth Sunday in November, If,80,
when the spirit of Martha Davis Beck,
at about four p. ni., took its flierht. to
the eternal city of God. On Monday
following tender hands of loving
friends laid her remains away in Lau
rel' Hill cemetery to await the resur
rection morning. As we turned away
from the mother's new-made grave
her boy not yet nineteen years olo,
was left in this old world without fa
ther or mother, brother or sister to
fight his way through life till now,
On January 8, 1885, he was married
to Mary Ida Jeter, who has been an
help-meet indeed.
In the spring of 1010 I was persuad-
ed to he a candidate for the legisla-
ture, and have been in every race from
that time till now, I have been the
"stormy petrel" of Carroll county pol-
itics for about twenty-five years. My
successes and defeats you reader-*
know. 1 have some of the bitterest
