reetions are literally carpeted wi'h i
masses of brightly colored blossoms.
The abundant vegetation is under-
stood when we think of the excellent
season—a mild winter mid plenty of
moisture—which nurtured ami fos
tered plant growth. Biology chtrser-
in many high schools have been buvv
collecting and studying the wild flow-
eis as fast as they have developed,
later exhibiting specimens labelel
with their common names.
One of our wvrliest wild flower*,
Spring Beauty, is a low-grow inr
plant bearing small white flowers
with pink veining and pink anthers.
Another early spring plant is the
Bladder-pod or Popweed, which has
small bright yellow, four-petalleU
flowers, arranged in the form of a
cross, characteristic of the mustard
family. The fruit is a bladder-like
pod about the size of a small pen,
and makes a slight popping sound
when crushed. Another member of
the Mustard family is the Pepper-
«rass, which has very small white
flowers followed by tiny peppery,
flattened seed cases.

uromwell or Puccoon may be easily
identified by its yellow flowers With
five-lobed frilled corollas. Fields are
practically covered with them now.
Hluels are extremely small plants,
runt more than an inch or two m
Height, which bear very tiny, dainty
four-lobed blossotus either of a deep
blue or a very pale rose color.
Wild Onions of several species are
common here, some white, some pale
pinkish lavender, some deep red;
some have scaly bulbs, some bulbs
coated with a net work of brown fi-
bers.
One of the daintiest blos::oms of the
locality is the wild Blue Flax. The
plants are slender and delicate, some-
times a foot in height, and bear small,
pale blue flowers whose petals are
easily shattered.
A showery plant is the brick or
orange-rod Mallow, which, in its gen-
eral appearance clearly shows its re-
lationship to the cultivated cotton,
okra, hybiscus and hollyhock.
Two members of the Geranium
family are now attracting consider-
able attention, one of them, the
Stork's-bi 11, has purplish red flower*
about one inch in diameVT. The
plant is so named because the seed
container resembles the h«a« of a
stork. Its leaves are subject, to a
warty growth. The other niemh.-- ot
dalis, is a low spreading plant with
finely cut, compound leaves and bears! 'his family is known as ^ <>anes-
