County Fleahoppers,
Dust If Needed,
Farmers Advised
South Texas, as well as the
lower part of Central and West
Texas, are having cotton flea-
hopper trouble right now. But
it won’t pay to dust unless you
have enough fleahoppers to
make it worth while, says
Charles A. King, extension en-
tomologist of Texas A. & M.
college.
Taking a fleahopper count is
the best way to find out if you
have enough of the cotton pests
bothering your crop to put out
--------x
about the same as the boll wee-
vil count. Step over about 40 or
50 feet from the corner of the
field. Start here and walk to-
ward the opposite corner on the
far side of the field, counting
the fleahoppers on the plants
as you go. The place to look for
the hoppers is in the top of
the niain stem in the terminal
buds. Check those small squar-
es for presence of the fleahop-
per. If he’s there, the square
has been punctured and killed.
The fleahoppers suck the
juices out of the squares, stoo-
ping them from further growth.
To get a good representative
count, check 33 plants on one
side of the field, 34 in the mid-
dle and 33 more on the far side.
If you get as many as 25 flea-
hoppers, it’s time to get out the
poisons
For a good kill on fleahop-
pers, any of the following dusts
are recommended: 10 percent
chlorinated camphene (toxa-
phene) plus 40 percent or more
sulphur, 5 percent DDT and at
least 75 percent sulphur, 3 per-
cent gamma BHC plus 40 per-
cent or more sulphur, or 5 per-
cent DDT and 3 percent gam-
ma plus 40 percent or more
sulphur.
These new insecticides are
much quicker and more effec-
tive than the old sulphur ro-
tenone or the calcium-arsenate
and sulphur formerly used.
