Notes

Additional item detail: At the time of this photograph, Jack Robinson was the assistant director of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. He is the one who gave Mr. Taniguchi the permission to build the Oriental Garden. Robinson initially gave permission thinking that the garden would be 1000 square feet. Beverly Sheffield, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department director, asked Jack about the drawings or plans; Mr. Taniguchi had told Jack that the plans were in his head, which seemed fine at the time, but less so under the scrutiny of the director. Jack was a bit worried and upon returning home, went to the garden to discover that Mr. Taniguchi had cleared three and one half acres. Jack Robinson went on the be Austin Parks and Recreation Department director in 1973.
