Portrait of Sgt. George V. Huffmon, of the U.S. Army Medical Corps in uniform. On his uniform is a braid which signified he was in the Infantry and the serpent, the Medical Corps. Written on the back is the notation, "Havana, Cuba, Nov. 2, 1906. George V. Huffmon, Co. B, Hospital Corps, USA; Camp Columbia, Havana, Cuba. A bad picture." Added additional information by staff: Sgt. Huffmon enlisted in the Army on January 25, 1906. Camp Columbia was the headquarters or base camp and was located just west of Havana. Denton's first public library opened on June 6, 1937, in Denton County Courthouse. It quickly outgrew the space and in 1949, the City of Denton donated a tract of land on Oakland Street for a new library.

The U.S. Medical Corps at that time period made great attempts to improve sanitation, drinking water, and combat disease and epidemics such as smallpox, yellow fever, and malaria.
