Note.-In comparing census reports of different years, it must be Iept in mind that regulations gov-
erning the inclusion of establishmentsbhave changed. Prior to the 1890 census all one-man shops and home
and neighborhood industries were included. In the census records of 1899, 1909 and 1919 such are ex-
cluded (note-the drop in number of establishments, 1880-1899) and no establishment reporting less than
$500 products is included. For the biennial census reports of 1921 and 1923 only establishments reporting
$,00O products for the year were included.
