THE TEXAS ALMANAC. 199
TEXAS HEALTH STATISTICSStatistics of health in Texas are col-.
lected by the Bureau of Vital Statistics
of the State Department of Health. Texas
is not included in the registration area of
the United States for the reason that it
does not yet report 90 per cent of births,
deaths, and other items bearing on pub-
lic health. Some Texas cities, including
Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, San An-
tonio, Houston, Galveston, Waco and
Beaumont, are included in the registra-
tion area. There are about twelve other
States which are not included in the reg-
istration area of the United States.
Due to consistent effort on the part of
the State Department of Health, however,
Texas is approaching the percentage re-
quired for inclusion in the Federal regis-
tration area. In 1925, the latest figures
available until late in 1927, Texas report-
ed about 70 per cent of the estimated
number of births, and 82 per cent of the
estimated number of deaths.
Statistics given on followiig pages are
sufficiently complete to present valuable
information relative to the prevalence of
different diseases in Texas. However, in
the county list, one should not calculate
death rate and birth rate per thousond of
population for the reason that the rate
depends, as yet, too largely upon the effi-
ciency of the county in reporting to the
State Health Department, to give an ac-
curate estimate of health conditions.
Tho laws of Texas require physicians to
make eports (Revised Civil Statutes,
1925), but this provision frequently is
ignored.
