Efforts were made to determine if the remains were those of Air Force
Lieutenant Michael Joseph Blassie. Shot down over Vietnam on May 11,
1972 while flying a bombing mission, his body was never recovered.
Though his wallet and dog tags were found near the crash site, be was
simply listed as “killed in action.” On Memorial Day of 1984, his remains
were placed in the Tomb of the Unknowns where they remained for the
next 14 years.
But that all changed when DNA tests confirmed that the unknown was
indeed Lt Blassie. On July 12, 1998 he was laid to rest in the National
Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. An honor guard fired a 21-gun salute and
F-15 fighter pilots flew the honorary “missing man” formation. Now the
name of a man who was once classified as unknown, is clearly marked on
the military’s standard headstone of White Georgia marble.
This week's guest writer is Rev. A.L. Draper,
pastor of First Baptist Church of Wylie and a
member of the Wylie Ministerial Alliance.
Good News! We don’t have to wait for some new technology to convince
us that God knows and loves us. We just need to
Develop New Appreciation for the Bible that confirms His love and con-
cern.
Destined to be an
“unknown?”
Perhaps you may sometimes feci like you will walk through life and will
die with the same classification as Lt. Blassie ... unknown. But the truth
of Scripture declares us “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face
to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as 1 also am
known.” (I Corinthians 13:12)
We live in an incredible age; an age of technol-
ogy so advanced that it often “boggles” our minds. In May of this year,
technology invaded a quiet place that many of you have visited in
Arlington National Cemetery. For there the quiet tranquility of the Tomb
of the Unknowns was unearthed.
