On Monday, November 22, a
panel composed of Jim Barton, h
Claire Connor, Joan Kennerly,
and Mary Dunn discussed Joseph
Heller's book, Catch - 22.
The panel presented a
highly entertaining discussion,
The book deals with the injus-
tices perpetrated on pilots
.uring World War II. One exam-
ple cited was the regulation
requiring some pilots to serve
as many as 50 missions before
they might return to the U.S.
Mr. Heller has presented to us
a strange, disrupted society.
The hero of the story is a re-
pudiation of the traditional
heroic code; he is one of the
contemporary non-heroes. And
et the book is by and large
umorous in style. It is pre-
:isely this facade of humor
which gives credibility to the
situations and characters, and
forve to Mr. Heller's critical
appraisal of our society.
And that statement, asit
that statement, asit
was brought forth
tussion seems to be that
cannot break away
society, even an
strained society, and still
retain his identity as a man.
In other words, Mr. Heller is
trying to tell us that a man
is the product of his society,
and. he cannot exist outside of
that context which gives him
meaning and purpose.
"The United Nations: Facts
and Illusions" is the title of
a lecture by Politics profes-
sor Leo Paul DeAlvarez sched-
uled for tonight at 7:30 in
the SUB lounge.
Professor DeAlvarez will
discuss the historical devel-
opment of the • UN and analyze
the possibility of building a
world community around this
organization. DeAlvarez feels
"it is illusory to think that
there is a basis for true com-
munity in the UN." Be states
organization was not
a world community,
it has little effect
world politics as presently
constituted .
DeAlvarez graduated with
honors in liberal arts from
the University of California
in 1957. He began graduate
work in political science
Stanford University on a
row Wilson Fellowship,
served as
of Dr. Peter
Hoover Ipstitution.
