STRIKES TIE
UP ALL WORK
THROUGH INDIA
Tha Ancctatxl Prett
CALCUTTA Dec. 1. India Infor-
mation lluren Dy Mall) A general
strike wave has been sweeping over
the Industrial sections of India af-
fecting every Industry. The labor
situation In Bombay city is reported
to l)o growing more serious. The
stiiie of the postal and telegraph
workers of the street railway men
nnd f the gas workers still contin-
ues. V survey of the situation shows
that tlk posimeu have been on strike
for CO days now gas workers for 50
days and street railway men for 40
nnd that the condition of the strik-
ers Is serious llecently a new Btrlke
of 20000 milkmen was declared and
Bombay's milk supply cut off. The
city's business Interests continue to
be disturbed.
In Madras a lockout of operatives
of the Buckingham Mills has been In
progress for four weeks. The inJJl
owners have announced that 1500 of
the 5000 strikers have been perma-
nently dismissed. They offered to
take back the other 3000 at an In-
crease of 50 to 75 per cent In wages
beginning with the new year. Latest
reports indicate that the mill owners'
offer has not been accepted
I In Calcutta 0000 coachmen bars
warned their employers that they will
go on strike unless their salaries are
increased. Men employed In the Ran-
goon arsenal are reported to be on
strike demanding higher wages he-
causj of the high cost of living.
One strike that of the stevedores
has come to an end but it is reported
thatauother of great magnitude has
begun In the coal fields. This I re-
garded as the beginning of what may
become a general strike In the col-
lieries. India Is already suffering
from coal shortage.

KOUT WORTH Jau. 12. The old
adage that "Satan finds mischief for
idle hands to do" is substantiated
Port Worth police say by the depart-
ment's annual report. "The police
blotter Is n barometer of the economic
and social conditions" the report said.
During 11)17 when there was a pe-
riod of financial depresslou according
to the report the arrests in Fort
Worth were nearly 100 per cent more
than In 11)10 when there was plenty
of work and the Industries were thriv-
ing. Simllnr conditions obtained in
other parts of the htnte It was said.
In 1020 the number of arrests de-
dined still further although there
were more in the latter part of the
year than In the first part. Prohibi-
tion has. reduced the number charged
with Intoxication to a very low fig-
ure compared with previous years tho
