LATEST WORD ON SUBJECT
Epidemic Probably Not Spanish In
Oriflln Germ Still Unknown Peo-
ple Should Guard Against "Droplet
Infection" Surgeon General Blue
Makes Authoritative Statement.
Washington D. a (Special.) Al-
though King Alfonso of Spain vvbi
J one of the victims of the Influenu epi
demlc In 1S03 and uguln this .uumer
Spanish authorities repudiate nuy
claim to Influenza as a "Spanli-li" dis-
ease. If the people of this couulry do
not tnke care the epidemic will be-
come so widespread throughout the
United Suites that boon we blinll hear
the disease called "American" Inllu
euza. A
In response to o request for dcllnlte
Information concerning Spanish Inllu-
enza. Surgeon General Rupert Blue of
the U. S. I'ubllc Health Service litis
authorised the following oftcial Inter-
view: What It Spanish Influenza? Is It
something new? Does it come from
Spain?
"The disease now occurring In this
countrj -tind called 'Spanish Influen-
za resembles n very contagious kind
of VohlT accompanied b fever pains
Coughs and Sneezes
Spread Diseases
As Dangerous as Poison C3 Shells
In the head -eyes ear back or other
parts 'of the body nnd a feeling of sc-
"vere sickness. In most of the cases the
symptoms disappear after three or four
jdays the patient then rapidly recover
ing borne or tne patients noweer
develop pneumonia or Intlninmntlon
ot'the ear or mcnlusltls nnd tniny of
these complicated rases die. Whether;
this so-called 'Sp"nish influenzn is
Identical with the epidemics of influen-
za of earlier .j ears Is not yet Known.
"Epidemics of Influenza have visited
this country since 1G47. It is Interest-
ing to know that this first epidemic
was brought here from Valencia
Sprain Since that time there lue
been numerous epidemics of the dis-
ease. In 1SS9 and IS'jO nn epldemlt
of Influenza starting somenhcre In the
Orient spread first to ttussia and
thence over iiractlcally the entire civ-
ilized world. Three iears later there
was another flare-np ot the disease.
Both times the epidemic spread wide-
ly oer tlic United States.
"Although the present epidemic Is
called "Spanish .lnfli:enrj.' there Is no
reason to believe th.it it oilginnted in
Spain. Smile writers who have studied
the question believe that the epidemic
came from the Orient nnd they call at-
tention to the fact that the Germans
mention the disease as occurring aloug
the eastern front In the summer and
fall of 1017."
How can "Spanish influenza" be rec-1
ognized?
"There 13 as jet no certain way in
which a single rase of 'Spanish Influ-
enza' can be recogi.ired On the oth-
er hand recognition Is easy where
there Is a group of cases. In contrast
to the outbreaks of ordinary coughs
and colds which usaally occur In the
cold months epidemics ot Influenza
may occur at any season of the jear.
yhus the present epidemic raged most
Intensely In Europe in Mn. June (mil
July. Moreover In the case of ordi-
nary colds the general symptoms
(fever pain depression) are bj no
means as severe or us sudden In their
onset as they are In Influenza. I'inal-
ly ordinary colds do not spread
through the coirmunltj so rapldlv or
so extensively as does Influenzn.
In most cases n person taken slcl:
with Influenza feels sick rather sad-j

with this comes n fever In which the

may be running from the nose or
I there may be some cough. These signs
of a cold may not be marked; never-
theless tiie patient looks andfeelery

"In addition to the appeararce and 4

1 States njglenle laboratory w til fur-

' vldual casts of this disease can be
recognised."
What Is the course of the disease?
Do peopls die of it?
"Ordimirll the fever ln"!ts from
three to four days and the patient re-
i
covers uut wnue tneproportion or
deaths In the present epIJemlc has
gcnernllj been low. In some plaies the
! outbreak has been severe and deaths
have been numerous. Wlien denlh oc-
curs It Is usuall) the result of n com-
plication." What causes the disease and how Is
It spread?
"Bncterioloslsts who have studied In-
fluenza ipldem1cs In the past have
found In m.mv or the cases a very
Small rod shaped germ called nfter Its
discoverer Pfclfler's bacillus In other
cases of apparently il.e sime Kind of
fllsease-there wire found pneutuoc-occi
the germs of lobar pneumonia. Still
others have been mused bj strepto-
cocci nnd by others geims vvlth long
names.
"So matter what particular kind of
germ causes the epidemic. It is now
believed that Influenza Is alvvajs
spread from person to person the
germs being carried with the nlr along
with the very small droplets of mucus
expelled by coughing or sneezing
forceful talking nnd the like by one
who already has the genus of the dis-
ease. Thej may also bo carried about
In the air In the form of dust coming
from dried mucus from coughing nnd
sneezing or from careless people who
spit on the floor and on the sidewalk.
As In most other catching diseases n
person who has only a mild attack of i
the disease-himself may give a very
severe attack to others."
What should be done by th- who
catch the dlsease7
"It Is very Important that every per-
son who becomes sick vvlth Influenza
should go home at once and go to bed.
This will help keep away dangerous
complications and will at the samr
time keep the patient from scattering
the dlsrase far and wide. It Js hlghlj
desirable that no one .be ntlovved? to
sleep In the same room witti the "pa-
tlent In Jact n.o.one- tjur nip nurse
should be allowed lu the room.
"If there Js cough nnd sputum or
'running of the eyes and nose care
U should be taken that all such dis
charges arc collected on bits of gauze
or ragor papernnpkins pn;l burnedj.
If the patient complains' of fever and1
headache she should le given water to
drink a cold coupress to the forehead
and a light sponge. Only such medi-
cine should be given as Is prescribed
by the docton. It Is foolish to nsk-Jhe
druggist to prescribe and may be din-
gerous to take the so called -safe sure
and harmless' remedies advertised by
patentrracdtcine manufacturers
"If the patient Is so situated that he
-can be attended onl.v by some one who
must also look nfter others In the fiiin-
lly. It Is'advlsable that such attendant
vear it wrapper apron or gown over
the ordinary house clothes vvht!e-In the
sick room and slip this off when leav-
ing to look after the others.
"Nurses aid attendants will do well
to guard ngalnct breathlngn dtinger-
ous disease germs2;-v earing a simple
fold ofgauze or mask whllo near the
patlenfT
Will a person who has had Influenza
before catch th: disease again?
"It is well Known that un attack of
mcaslc or scarlet fever or smallpox
usually protects a person against an-
other attack of the same disease. This
appeal's not to be ttoie of 'Spanish in-
fluenza.' According to newspaper re-
ports the King of Spain sulTeicd an
attatk of influenza during the epi-
demic thirty years ego nnd was again
stricken during the recent1 outbreak In
Spain."
How can one guard against Influ-
enza? "In guarding against disease of
nil
kinds. It Is Important that the body be
kept strong nnd able to fight ofr dis-
ease germs. This c-.m tie done by hav-
ing a proper proportion of work plav
and rest by keeping the bod well
clothed nnd by eating sufliclent whole-
some and properlv selected food. In
conntlon with diet it is well to re-
member that milk Is one of the best
all-around foods obtainable for adults
as well ns children. So far as a dis.
ease like Influenza Is concerned health
authorities everywhere recognize the
very close relation between Its spread
and overcrowded homes While It Is
not always possible cspsciilly In
times like the present to avoid suclr
overcrowding people should consider
the health dinger nnd make every
effort to reduce the hone overcrowd-
ing to a minimum. 1 lie value of fresh
