rooted in the mind of
Spielberg, who co-wrote and
co-produced this occult opus.
The more effective scenes
bear a strong resemblance to
1977’s “Close Encounters of
the Third Kind,” possibly
Spielberg’s best film to date.
The toys propelling
themselves around the room
and tiie wide eyed
wonderment of the children
are images directly borrowed
from
(and, according to
from an expei
filmmaker named Kenneth *
Anger).
The excesses of this film
seem to be more a result of
Hooper’s direction than
anything else. A great deal of
plausibility is lost at certain
moments, such as one near
the end of the film when the
family’s house is literally
swallowed by ghosts.
Subtlety has never been
one of Hooper’s strong
points, but his lack thereof is
more damaging here than it
was when the subject was
chainsaw massacres,
overall result is
schizophrenic,
fortunately the story is
intriguing enough to fend off
some of the problems.
To sum it up, this film will
appeal to anyone who likes
being scared but doesn’t mind
being “grossed out” in the
process.
The case includes Jobeth
Williams, Craig T. Nelson and
Beatrice Straight. Frank
Marshall co-produced for
Metro - Goldwyn (- Mayer
with Spielberg, who wrote
the story. Collaborating with
Spielberg on the screenplay
were Michael Grate and Mark
Victor, and the soundtrack
was composed by veteran
Jerry Goldsmith,
“Poltergeist” is rated PG, but
that rating was the subject of
some controversy at the time
of its release.
