Graham at his news
conference Monday and in a
subsequent written statement
defended his attendance last
week at a Moscow conference
on peace and the threat of
nuclear war and his comment
that he found a measure of
religious freedom in the
Soviet Union.
He said he would not have
gone to Moscow had there
been any restriction on what
he could say.
Acknowledging that there
are restrictions on* religious
communities, and that the
Soviet government is
“officially atheistic,” Graham
said he found more religious
freedom than he anticipated.
This contrasted with the
late 1930’s when churches
“had virtually ceased to exist
as institutions,” he said.
Graham said he discussed
human rights and religious
freedom privately with Soviet
officials and religious leaders.

The major thrust of the
film has nothing to do with
wars or politics, however.
These elements are just a
backdrop for the true story
of two outstanding runners
and their quest for gold at the
Paris Olympics of 1924. The
first is an ambitious, brooding
Jew named Harold Abrahams
(darkly portrayed by Ben
Cross) who runs to prove his
own inner greatness. The
second is an intensely devout
Scottish Christian named Eric
Liddell (played believably by
Cross’ direct opposite, Ian
Charleson) who runs for the
greater glory of God.
On a five - year odyssey to
Olympian glory, the two
meet on the field, become nuuuug ««» «c|
rivals, then during their days drug charges during a raid at missing from the home,
of respective triumph become
friends of mutual admiration.
The movie benefits from
an intelligent script by Colin
Welland and an interesting
soundtrack by Vangelis. The
supporting players include
Nigel Havers, Cheryl
Campbell and Alice Krige,
along with guest appearances
by Sir John Gelgud and one
of the leaden of the British
“angry young men” film
movement of the 1950 ’ s
Lindsay Anderson.

“Chariots of Fire” ♦♦♦’A
While it is certainly a
distinguished piece of cinema,
“Chariots of Fire” was a
rather dubious selection for
the “Best Picture of the
Year” Academy Award when
compared with Warren
Beatty’s disturbing epic,
“Reds."
The only real problem with
“Chariots” is that. its story
seldom moves as quickly as
the Olympic runners upon
which it focuses. It is a long,
lingering look at amateur
sports in a day when the
ideals of non - professional
competition were still very
much intact.
It is also a somewhat
detached effort in
comparison with Beatty’s
stirring chronicle of American
radicalism during the World
War I era. But when viewed
strictly on its own merits,
“Chariots’ is a pretty
impressive film.
