AUSTIN — Births were up,
deaths were down and,
according to “Texas Vital
Statistics,” heart disease was
the leading cause of death in
Mineral Wells in 1981.
"Vital Statistics,” an annual
report issued by the T e x as
Department of Health, lists
258 local births, of thes, 139
were boys and 119 were girls,
243 were white 15 black.
Statewide, 281,558 babies
were bom to Texas residents
in 1981 • a new record for the
third straight year. Of those
babies, 144,312 were male
and 137,246 female, 243,022
were white and 38,586 black.
Although the number of
births increased, the birth
rate dropped slightly from
19.2 births per 1,000
population in 1980 to a 1981
rate of 19.1.
The report also showed
that 183 residents of Mineral
Wells died in 1981. Of those,
103 were male and 80 female,
173 were white and 10 black.
In 1981, 110,498 Texas
residents died, another new
record. More than 55 percent
of those dead, 61,475
persons, were male, 49,023
were female. Almost 96,000
whites died as compared to
14,670 blacks. The death rate
decreased to 7.5 deaths per
1,000 population in 1981,
down from the 1980 rate of
7.6.
As was true with the rest
of the state, heart disease was
the no. 1 cause of death
locally, killing 53 residents of
Mineral Wells. The second
leading cause of death locally
was cancer, which accounted
for 28 deaths, this was
followed by strokes, with 17
deaths. Statewide, heart
disease killed 38,463 Texans
last year, followed by cancer,
which was responsible for
21,770 deaths and strokes
with 9,439 deaths. Accidents
claimed 7,935 Texans* lives
Together those four leading
causes were responsible for
seven out of every 10 deaths
in 1981. Other important

Sheriff's Report
Ai
Palo Pinto County sheriff’s
deputies have determined
that a shotgun confiscated
from the camp of a burglary
suspect at Possum Kingdom
Lake is not the weapon used
in the murder of a Tyler
woman on Aug. 6, Sgt. Karl
Allman said Monday.
Allman said the shotgun
did not have distinguishing
marks reported on the
murder weapon.
The gun was seized by
officers who ' pursued a
burglar from the Lions Club
at the lake to his campsite
after the burglar was
surprised inside the building
last week.
Though officers staked out
the camp, which had been
abandoned by the suspects
they failed to apprehend the
man and a woman companion
who returned to the camp
and got their gear after the
officers called off the watch.
Nothing was reported
missing in the break - in at
the clubhouse.
Burglars who gained entry
by knocking out a back
window of the cabin with a
pole ax, took several water
skis, a pair of binoculars arid
a rod and reel. Total value of
the stolen articles was placed
at more than $1,000. Officers
also found a lock had been
pried off the door of a
storage building at the cabin.
The burglary reportedly
occurred sometime last week.
Clayton Patterson also
reported that a black cow
with a black calf and a heifer
valued at a total of $800 were
missing from his pasture
north of the landfill.
The cattle reportedly
disappeared between May 2
and June 18, but the loss was
not reported until Aug. 18.
Antarctic
explorers
believed dead
In other action, officers
recovered a television set
reported stolen from the
trailer home of H.T.
Blankenship at Pat and
Herman’s Camp at Possum
Kingdom Lake on Aug. 20.
Allman said the set, valued
at $599, was recovered from
the home of a man who had
been questioned as a possible
witness to the burglary. The
man reported the set had
been left with him as
collateral on a loan by
another man.
No arrests have been made
in the case, Allman said.
Officers also investigated a
break - in at a lake cabin at
Hog Bend owned by Tom
Bourdreau of Mineral Wells
on Aug. 21.
