TEXAS ALMANAC 1951-1955
HARRY C. WITHERS
HARRY C. WITHERS, executive editor,
was born in Denton, Texas. H-e was edu-
cated in the public schools there and at
Haskell Institute at Durant, Oklahoma.
He began his newspaper career on The
Denton Record-Chronicle in 1901, after
serving two years in the American Ex-
peditionary Forces in the Philippine Is-
lands. He resigned as city editor of the
Denton paper in 1903, when he became a
staff correspondent of The Houston Post.
In May, 1904 he came to The News as
a reporter, became sports editor in 1905
and city editor in 1911. In 1914 he trans-
ferred to The Dallas Journal as city edi-
tor. In 1918 he became managing editor
of The Journal, serving in that capacity
until 1938. Upon sale of The Journal he
became associate managing editor of The
News; in 1939 was made managing editor
and in 1950 was made executive editor.
He has been a member of the board of
directors since 1938.
LEVEN T. DEPUTY, mechanical super-
intendent, was born on a Cooke County
farm but moved to Dallas wxith his par-
ents when a small child. He was gradu-
ated from T he old Dallas High School,
now Crozier Tech.
He first worked for The News as an
(,xtra in the mailing room in 1902. His
continuous service began June, 1904 when
he enrolled as an apprentice pressman.
In 1906 he transferred to the composing
room as an apprentice printer. iHe re-
ceived his union card in 1910. In 1916
he became assistant foreman of the com-
posing room; in 1928 foreman. In 1933
he was named chairman of the mechani-A!

cal board and in 1937 was appointed me-
chanical superintendent xith supervision
over all mechanical departments. He
