TEXAS' OWN FULLY INTEGRATED STEEL MILL
OPERATES ON TEXAS RAW MATERIALS
Planned in the late 1930's to afford a Texas source for the peace-time
steel needs of Texas, the first unit of the first .omplete Texas steel mill was
compie'ed in 1942 It consisted of 3 open-hearth furnaces together with rolling
and finishing mills. Since 1942, three more open-hearth furnaces, a blooming
miil, plate mill and much other steel finishing equipment have been added.
Ir 1947, Sheffield resumed opercation cf the blast furnace, coke ovens
and East Texas iron ore m'nes which were operated by Sheffield during the
war under Government subsidy.
Today, the Sheffield plant, on the Houston ship channel, is a completely
integrated steel mill making blooms; b;lets; plates; merchant bars; joists;
structural shapes; reinforcing bars; reinforcing mesh; woven, barbed and
other types of wire fencing; nails of all sizes, etc.
From East Texas iron ore, scrap iron and steel from all Texas, Texas
limestone, and with Texas oil and gas, up to 3500 Texans employed at the
Sheffield mill and mines make up to a half million tons annually of finished
steel for Texas industry, agriculture, commercial construction and home
b ilding which continues to expand at a tremendous pace.
Sheffield steel making is deeply a part of Texas. Virtually all of the cost
of a ton of Sheffield Steel remains at home in the hands of Texans.
