Following World War I a bronze and marble group was
placed in the lobby of the American Telephone and Tele-
graph Company building in New York. On it are inscribed
these words, "Service to the nation in peace and war."
They are more than words. They are the very spirit of
the entire Bell System organization. In these stirring days,
we pledge ourselves again to the service of the nation.., so
that "Government of the people, by the people, for the
people, shall not perish from the earth."
