The Chisos Mountains rise almost one mile above the valley of the Rio Grande at their
base. The peak in the middle is Mount Emory which does not rise much above the crest of
the range. These picturesque mountains are included in the area of the Big Bend Park project.

Survey.TEXAS COUNTIES, LARGE AND SMALL.
The largest county in Texas is Brewster
with an area of 6,208 square miles. Brewster
is approximately six times as large as the
state of Rhode Island, three times as large as
Delaware and larger than Connecticut. Pecos,
4,736 square miles, is second largest Texas
county, according to revised Census Bureau
data. This distinction formerly went to Hud-
speth which is now placed third with 4,533
square miles. All of these counties are in the
Trans-Pecos. Largest county east of the Pecosis Webb, 3,295 square miles. The largest in
the eastern half of the state is Harris, 1,747
square miles.
Rockwall is the smallest Texas county, 147
square miles. Thus Texas' largest county is
more than forty-two times as large as its
smallest. The three next smallest counties
are Camp, 190 square miles; Somervell, 197;
and Morris. 263.
