Wilbur Sturtevant Nye: Frontier Historian
This image of Fort Sill c. 1896 was taken by William "Ed" Irwin, whose studio was located
in Chickasha, Indian Territory. Photograph courtesy Lawrence T.Jones III, Austin.
When the project was announced to the public, it generated considerable
interest, evidence that the "historical sketch" intended for internal con-
sumption would have a much broader appeal than the military had proba-
bly initially anticipated. 'Your investigation should produce a number of
features that would make interesting Sunday pages for the Daily Oklahoman,"
Walter M. Harrington, managing editor of the Daily Oklahoman, wrote Nye.13
And the Saturday Evening Post contacted Nye about writing an article on the
Battle of Adobe Walls, an offer he rejected in order to devote himself to
Carbine & Lance.14
The sweeping scope of the project became apparent at an early stage. Nye
soon envisioned expanding his research into a book, even raising questions
about its publication, sales, and royalties. "Lieut. Nye informs me that judg-
ing from inquiries received by him, he believes that there will be some
demand for the completed history of Fort Sill," Black informed Blakely.
Black recommended that the post's print shop run off a limited edition of
150 copies; beyond that, publishing and sales would be up to Nye, though
profit arrangements would be subject to the commandant's approval."
