On November 30, 1990, the Handbook of Vzctorza County was shipped
from the printer. Compiled by the staff of the Handbook of Texas with
assistance from the Victoria County Historical Commission, the book
presents a selection of topics related to Victoria County that are sched-
uled for publication in the revised Handbook of Texas. Response has
been good, and the VCHC reports that they have sold more than 400
of the 500 copies that they purchased.
A committee of four public school educators met with Association di-
rector of educational services David De Boe and with Doug Barnett on
January 19-20 to begin planning a teachers' manual for the Handbook
of Texas. It is hoped that the manual, which will be completed later this
year, will provide junior and senior high school teachers with a signifi-
cant resource for using the Handbook in the teaching of Texas history,
provide increased visibility for the Handbook, and lay the groundwork
for the preparation of a teacher's manual for the revised Handbook.
The Association dedicated three plaques in honor of individuals and
foundations who have given or pledged $5o,ooo or more to the Hand-
book. They include the Amon G. Carter Foundation of Fort Worth, the
late Mary Alice Pettis of Bonham, half-sister of photographer Erwin E.
Smith and founder of the Erwin E. Smith Foundation of Sherman, and
the late Fred H. Moore, a longtime member of the Association who was
honorary president for life.
