Affairs of the Association
RON TYLER
This has been another good year for the Association. We passed the
halfway mark on the revision of the Handbook of Texas and are on
schedule for publication in 1995; we published a number of excellent
historical works, both in the Southwestern Hzstorzcal Quarterly and in our
book publications program; and we hosted several successful con-
ferences, of both the Junior Historians and Texas History Day as
well as "Women and Texas History." In addition, the ninety-fifth an-
nual meeting at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas was a great success with
an attendance approaching 500 registered, and we raised a total of
$21,995.64 in the annual auction-$15,348.50 in the regular auction
and $6,647.14 in the silent auction-for which we are indebted to
our hardworking auction committee: chair Michael Heaston, Dorothy
Sloan, and Michael Parrish, all of Austin. We are also indebted to our
hardworking staff for the success of the meeting, as well as to John
Crain, who served as chair of the program committee.
MEMBERSHIP
Our memberships have remained about the same, for which we are
grateful. The loyal and enthusiastic members are what make Associa-
tion programs what they are. There have been two efforts made during
the past few months that have paid off handsomely. First, several mem-
bers of the Executive Council took it upon themselves to contact their
friends and acquaintances and recommend the Association to them.
This has proved to be very successful, for the personal recommenda-
tion is the most effective that we can have. Second, Texas Commerce
Bank included a brochure on the Handbook of Texas in its April credit
card statements, which have resulted in a number of orders for the
Handbook as well as in some new memberships.
At its March meeting the Executive Council discussed a corporate
membership program and asked the staff for recommendations as to
how one might be implemented and what we might expect of it.
