BE IT KNOWN, That 1, the undersigned, MEDICAL CENSOR for the
Senatorial District of
do, by these presents, in conformity to Law, GRANT PERMISSION
to to Practice WWW84,WS and ffE-
9,22Z within the District aforesaid, until the Annual Meeting of the Board of Medi- 9
cal Censors for the Republic of Texas, which will take place at the Seat of Government,
on the second Monday in November next.
GIVEN at this
day of A. D. 1838, and of the
Independence of Texas the Third.
Chills, fevers, and "bilious attacks of every kind" were common in the Republic,
where hot weather brought typhoid, malaria, and yellow fever. Citizens sought
remedies as varied as their afflictions, including home remedies, patent medi-
cines, and purgatives administered by a physician. These two 1838 imprints-
an advertising broadside and a temporary medical license-document the ex-
travagant claims of one popular nostrum as well as the early efforts of physi-
cians to regulate their profession. The design of the documents is equally in-
structive. In each, the printer's artistry helps transmit the intended message. In
the broadside, the lone star symbol is employed to help advertise a "Texan"
commodity; in the license, fancy type and filigree lend authority to an impor-
tant, if temporary, official document.
