By mid-century, settlement had spread west to the Cross Timbers. A =
upper southern/lower southern divide; B = north and east of this line,
blacks outnumbered Hispanics. "Yankees" are natives of New England
and New York; "Lower Midwesterners" are natives of Ohio, Indiana,
and Illinois. Military personnel at frontier posts are not included in the
