The four Handbook councils added to their numbers with recent con-
tributions from individuals, institutions, and foundations. Those who
make a $1,ooo contribution at one time to the Handbook of Texas become
members of the Republic of Texas Council. Council members will be
listed on the sponsors' pages in the Handbook of Texas, are awarded
a bronze TSHA map weight honoring their patronage, and become
life members of the Association. Our thanks to the following new mem-
bers of the Republic of Texas Council for their generous contributions:
John G. Adams, the Shell Company Foundation, the Harris and Eliza
Kempner Fund, Exxon Corporation, Eugene McDermott Foundation,
Eliza H. Bishop, Peter Wells, and the Permian Historical Society. New
Republic of Texas Council members Donna Galloway and Nathan C.
Galloway III each donated $1,500 to the Handbook. Mrs. Fred H. Moore,
another new member of the council, recently contributed $2,270. Coun-
cil member Margaret D. Wells gave an additional $1,ooo.
The Association has also established the Ranger Council for those
making a $o0,ooo contribution to the Handbook of Texas. Members of
the Ranger Council will be listed on the sponsors' pages in the Hand-
book, receive a bronze TSHA map weight, and become life members of
the Association. Two members of the Ranger Council, the King Ranch,
Inc., and the Rockwell Fund, Inc., each have recently given another
$5,000 to the Handbook project.
The San Jacinto Council was established for those individuals, cor-
porations, or foundations making a $25,000 contribution, which will
assist in perpetually endowing a research fellowship in Texas studies.
Members of the San Jacinto Council will be listed on the sponsors'
pages in the Handbook, receive a bronze TSHA map weight, and be-
come life members of the Association. Members of the San Jacinto
Council will also be awarded a leather-bound special edition of the
Handbook of Texas stamped with their names. New members of the San
Jacinto Council are the Nelda C. and H. J. Lutcher Stark Foundation and
Mrs. Clara Elisabeth Bates-Nisbet. Mrs. Bates-Nisbet's contribution is
made in memory of her maternal great-grandparents. Colonel John
Pelham Border and his wife, Catherine Elizabeth Harding, and General
Travis Greene Gustavus Broocks and his wife Elizabeth Ann Morris.
Mrs. Bates-Nisbet's contribution also honors her great-grandparents'
descendants: Emma Alston Border Broocks, Lycurgus Waters Broocks,
Emma Broocks, Kate Broocks Bates, William David Bates, Kate Hard-
ing Bates Parker, Frank Knight Parker, William Ernst Bates, Turla348
