To Build a Pacific Railroad 139
to escape T. J. Green's groundbreaking speech for the Atlantic and Pacific
Railroad during which he declared, "This road is emphatically the Southern
-yea, what the abolitionist truly calls the 'great slavery road'."" As it
turned out, Charleston had offered the last real chance for the South to
unite on a Pacific railroad. Skepticism and slavery issues took over the
conventions, railroad promoters, and the federal and state legislators. With
this, dreams of an antebellum southern Pacific railroad remained just that-
dreams.
74Green's speech, delivered near Marshall, Texas, reported in the Texas State Gazette
(Austin), July 29, I854.
