A new publication of the State Historical Society of Iowa, News-
paper Collection of the State Historical Society of Iowa, lists several
Texas newspaper items in the Society's library at Iowa City. Of
more than routine interest, is a four-month run of the Iowa Guards-
man, published at Brownsville from November, 1916, through Feb-
ruary, 1917, while Iowa troops were guarding the Texas border.
Clippings
The constitution of the Association provides that the Executive
Council may honor "members who show, by published work, special
aptitude for historical investigation" by electing them Fellows of
the Association. Three Fellows were elected at this year's annual
meeting. They are Dr. Lota Spell, Dr. Nettie Lee Benson, and Robert
Weddle. All three not only have shown "special aptitude" but have
exhibited in their work that versatility of interest that is the dis-
tinguishing mark of keen minds.
Dr. Spell is widely known as an authority on the music of the
Southwest, and, in addition to being a regular contributor of articles
and reviews to the Quarterly, was for many years the editor of Texas
Music News. She is the author of Music in Texas, Pioneer Printer:
Samuel Bangs in Mexico and Texas, and Research Materials for the
Study of Latin American History at the University of Texas, which
is the standard guide to the University's Latin American Collection.
In addition, Mrs. Spell's series of essays, Making Friends in Music
Land, published by the University Interscholastic League, is re-
membered with affection by an entire generation of Texas public
school students.
Dr. Benson needs no introduction to anyone who has ever threaded
the labyrinthine paths of Latin American historical bibliography.
Her work as librarian of the University of Texas Latin American
Collection and as a professor in both history and library science
brought her the Distinguished Service Award of the Southwestern
Council of Latin American Studies last year. Miss Benson is a spe-
cialist in the field of nineteenth-century Mexican history and is the
author of La diputaci6n provincial y el federalismo mexicano, as well
