of the Republic of Texas in 1893. Thereafter, her efforts for
several years centered around saving the Alamo in San Antonio,
a task which involved her in a heated controversy within the
Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She later organized the Texas
Historical and Landmarks Association, led the successful drive
to save the Spanish Governor's Palace in San Antonio, and suc-
ceeded in having a site in San Fernando Cathedral in San An-
tonio identified and marked as the burial place of the Alamo
defenders, all before her death on March 1, 1955-
