the addressing machine. I don't know whether this is the cause of
their not coming, but I received them very regular before they com-
menced using it.
I will now close by sending our loves to you all.
Your Brother,
C. C. Goodman
On January 28, 1861, the county delegates met in convention
at Austin. Governor Sam Houston tried in vain to convince the
secessionists that the interests of Texas could best be served by
remaining in the Union. On March 2, Texas Independence Day,
the convention met again to count the vote on secession. Texas
immediately joined ten other southern states to form the Con-
federate States of America. The war followed, and the exchange
of letters between C. C. Goodman and his brother, James, came
to an end.
Leon County, Texas, March 27, 1868
Dear Uncle,
I now have news. Too much. My dear father died October the 16th
in the year of our Lord 1861,24 and Ione Ann died August the 31st
in the year of our Lord 1862. She was kicked by a mule. It broke
her skull. Father died with the choking quincy.
From your Niece,
Texanna G. Inman
"Christopher Columbus Goodman was buried in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery near
the present town of Oakwood, Leon County, Texas. The epitaph on his tomb
stone reads:
"Remember friends as you pass by
As you are now so once was I.
As I am now so you must be
So leave off all and follow me."
The children of C. C. Goodman and Perriller M. Goodman were: Ione Ann Good-
man, June 16, 1849-August 31, 1862; Texanna Givva Goodman, December 28, 185o-?;
Christopher Columbus Goodman, February 25, 1853-October 8, 1855; James Rich-
ard Goodman, March 14, 1855-March 14, 1878; Christopher Columbus Goodman,
July 23, 1857-?; Delilah Ann Goodman, November 26, 1859-?; Samuel Chipley
Goodman, June 19, 1862-August g, 1871. The two brothers, James and C. C., never
saw each other after they were parted as children in New York; however, James
Goodman, Hiram Francis Goodman, and Leon Goodman did visit Texas in later
years. None of James Goodman's descendants came to Texas to live.376
