NIational flag and civil war burst upon the land. At that time
Sam Houston, who had been twice President of the Republic of
Texas, was Governor of that State. He was deposed from his
office by the secessionists for the reason that he was friend of the
Union. But to-day, no name save that of Washington is so loved
and revered in Texas as that of Sam Houston, and in the very
Capitol in which he had been deposed, there to-day stands a superb
marble statue in perpetuation of his memory, and also of the glory
and magnanimity of that great commonwealth.
