Among other recent acquisitions of the University of Texas
Library are files of The Cotton Plant and Southern Advertiser,
1852-1853, published at Washington and Baltimore; the Charleston
[S. C.] Daily Courier, 1861; the Charleston Daily Mercury, 1861-
1864; and the Richmond [Va.] Daily Dispatch, 1861-1863.
NEWS ITEMS
In 1924 Mr. C. M. Caldwell, then a regent of the University
of Texas, donated to the History Department of that institution
$150 to be awarded in prizes to high school students for essays on
local history. In 1925 he continued this fund and added $100
for essays by history teachers. The contest is managed by Pro-
fessor W. P. Webb. The prizes for 1925 have been awarded as
follows: To R. D. Holt, of Santa Anna, Texas, $100 for a history
of McCulloch County; and to the following high school students:
Thomas L. Bryan, Tyler, "The Old Stockade"; Henrietta New-
comb, Incarnate Word, San Antonio, "A Texas Veteran and His
Newspaper Collection" (the veteran was the grandfather of the
writer, James P. Newcomb); Eleanor Attebury, Marshall, "Isaac
Van Zandt: Marshall's Greatest Pioneer"; Alice Lee Perkins,
Nacogdoches, "History of the First District Court in Texas";
Anna Landrum Davis, Montgomery, "Old Montgomery"; Daurice
Sanderford, Waco, "History of Baylor University"; Helen E.
Pluenneke, Seguin, "Early History of Seguin"; Josephine Ranney,
Eagle Pass, "Callahan's Raid"; Weldon Skeen, Mexia, "Early
Mexia"; Evelyn Holman, Brownwood, "History of Horse Racing
in Brown County."
The prizes range from $40.00 to $7.50. The Dallas News pub-
lishes the ten winning essays and pays the students $5.00 in addi-
tion to the Caldwell prize.
