Bryan-Hayes Correspondence
Head Quarters, I think, at Dallas-Walter Sherman. He was a Col-
lege mate of Birch and Webb, and is a young man of character. I
think I have named him to you before.- Lizzie Little Campbell,
one of our Kenyon day friends, I see sometimes in Delaware. She
is a very agreeable person still, and with two or three grown young
people who are very promising.
I have travelled more than usual the past year. At St Paul,
Minn., Mrs. H. and I spent a week, with more than usual satisfac-
tion. I was ten days at Atlanta, Ga., last month-with a deal of
agreeable things in that most enterprising City.
Mrs. Hayes joins in all good wishes to you & yours.
As ever Sincerely
R. B. Hayes
BRYAN TO HAYES
Galveston, Feb. 7th, 1887.
Dear Rud:
I have yours of the 23rd Dec. before me. I got back here about
a week since in better health. I am not strong in that respect but
better and improving. I" am'glad to hhve such favorable accounts
of your children and yourself and wife. May the New Year bring
at its close the same glad tidings from you as to health and
well being of you and' yours.
I am pained deeply to know that I shall never again see my be-
loved friend Jones. I loved him so well and so long. Should I
ever visit Cin., I shall have great pleasure in renewing my ac-
quaintance with his family.
I congratulate you in having so acceptable a daughter-in-law.
My son Willie married a few weeks since a young lady of whom all
who know her speak well. Guy is at school'doing well; one of my
daughters (Hally) is here (having entered society this winter and)
having a gay time. Laura is in Baltimore on a visit to friends. I
am sorry to hear of Webb's loss-trust that it is not serious.,, Give
him my regrets and regards. Present my congratulations to
Birchard. I have met his brother-in-law, and I like him, and if it
comes in my way will be pleased to show it to him.
I have sold my plantation, and I am trying to so arrange matters
that I can take care of my health by leaving the coast at least part
of the year, but I do not know that I shall be able to carry out my
wishes.235
