:Principal acting as supt.Religious Bodies in Texas
Because of the rapid migration to Texas
from other states and, until recent years from
foreign countries, this state has more than
the average representation of different reli-
gious denominations. Forty-five major denom-
inational classifications are recorded in Texas
by the United States Bureau of the Census
with a total of eighty-seven denominations.
counting the subclassifications. The largest
membership of a single denomination, accoid-
ing to the latest census enumeration, is the
Catholic Church, with 604,308 However, this
is exceeded by the total of Baptist bodies.
membership of which was 793,267, according
to the most recent census.
Texas' religious beginning was Catholic
under Spanish (and later Mexican) sovereign-
ty The period of missionary effort, during
which the old missions at San Antonio and
other South and East Texas places were
founded, constitutes one of the colorful and
heroic chapters of Texas history. (See pp.
94-96 ) And the Catholic Church was main-
tained as the exclusive state religion during
the period of Anglo-American colonization.
Many of the earlier Texas colonists from
the United States were Catholics, though
some of them undoubtedly embraced the
Catholic faith perfunctorily as a part of the
agreement under which land grants were
made. One Protestant church is known to
have existed in Texas prior to the Texas
revolution. This was the Two-Seeds-in-the-
Spirit Predestinarian Baptist Church founded
by Daniel Parker, who removed his congrega-
tion from Illinois on the theory that he was
not violating the Mexican provision that no
other than the Catholic Church should be
organized" in Texas.

DAY AND EVENING CLASSESAfter the independence of Texas was won,
the growth of the Protestant denominations
was rapid as the inflow of population from
a wide variety of regions rapidly increased
the number of denominations represented
within the state.
Data below are from the United States
Census of 1936, the latest census on which a
report had been made at time of publication
of this volume. These figures are not pre-
cisely representative of denominational
strength today. However, they present a
fairly accurate picture of the field of reli-
gious bodies. The following tabulation is pre-
sented as the latest available information
