The picture on our cover for this
month features the 1922 Simmons
football team. As you look over the
nicknames of the players, it sounds
like something from the current
western TV series. Pictured on the
front row, left to right are: Coach
Hays, "Curly" Jackson, Raymond
"Mac" McHaney, Barfield, "Big" O.
Johnson, "Hoot" Gibson, and Burk-
head; second row; Sam Morris, "Big
Ben" Brashear, "Mean Boy" Thom-
as, "Cookie" Cook, Lacy "Pants"
Howerton and "Tread" Treadway;
third row; Truett "Little Pig" Hull,
John "Bullet" Camp, Adams, Frank
Kimbrough and L. Johnson.
Not pictured were Aubrey "Big
Four" Taylor, "Cotton" Thompson
and Yeager.
Three of the nine teams played
that year were scheduled for 1958,
just 36 years later. The schedule of
1922 included New Mexico Military
Institute, New Mexico A & M, Bay-
lor University, Texas Christian Uni-
versity, Trinity, Canyon Normal,
Austin College, Daniel Baker, and
Howard Payne.
The 1922 team won five, lost three
and tied one. The Cowboys climaxed
their season with a 15-7 defeat of
the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets.

made plans for an informal tea.

Martin, Will Henry Haney, Roy
Skaggs, George S t o w e, Leroy
Jennings, Mabel Reeves, Ada Bar-
ber Haralson, Jeanette Tippet
Caldwell, Burl King and Agnes
Caldwell Beckham.
The committee is asking that
everyone bring slides of their
children, or grandchildren and in-
troduce them to their old class-
mates. Each graduate will be
given a few minutes to tell about
himself and his family.RANGE RIDER STAFF

LIBRARY TO HAVE
OPEN HOUSE
The Friends of the Library have
announced they will hold open house
for the Hardin-Simmons University
Library on Saturday afternoon, Oc-
tober 25. The open house will be
from 4:30 to 6:30 P. M.
$18,000 worth of new furniture
throughout the library adds a com-
pletely new atmosphere. The books
are more logically arranged now and
provide much needed shelving space
according to Miss Mabel Willoughby,
librarian.
LETTERMEN PLAN COFFEE
DURING HOMECOMING
Head football coach Sam Baugh
and athletic director Bill Ledbetter
have sent a letter to the lettermen
of all cowboy sports inviting them
hack to the forty acres for Home-
coming on October 25. Specifically,
Sam and Bill have planned a coffee
in the lobby of Anderson Hall at
10:30 Saturday morning, October 25.
All men who have lettered in any
sport are invited. It is quite possible
that all lettermen did not receive
the personal letter, but they are in-
vited just the same.
The coffee and get together has
become an annual event on the Har-
din-Simmons campus during Home-
coming. This is an excellent oppor-
tunity for you to see many of your
friends of other years, as well as to
visit with our current coaching staff.-3-
