Sammy Baugh, the college and
professional great, accepted a five
year contract as head coach at
H-SU.
Baugh succeeds Murray Evans
who had held the position for
three years and resigned on Jan-
uary 30, during which his team
won 15 and lost 14 and tied two.
Last year his team won four and
lost six.
Baugh, who previously had
said he would not take the job,
said he changed his mind because
the determination of the com-
mittee members was so great he
could not refuse.
Baugh said he had been offer-
ed several head coach jobs at lar-
ger salaries and wasn't taking
Act of the H-SU job because of any
great financial gain. No salary
was announced but it was re-

Dr. Porter, a 1933 H-SU grad-
uate, has been chairman of the
voice department and director of
choral music since 1948.
He has also served as minister
of music at the First Baptist
Church.
His new position at Baylor
will be as professor in the De-
partment of Sacred Music, Dr.
Porter said. He will also serve as
minister of music at the Seventh
and J a m e s Street Baptist
Church in Waco.

after Head Coach Murray Evans
announced his resignation. The
resignation was announced by
President Evan A. Reiff January
30.
"Mr. Cunningham has won
many personal friends while at
H-SU and he hasn't lost a single
one by his resignation" Dr. Reiff
said, "Mr. Cunningham has dis-
played a fine spirit both on the
campus and in his resignation."

Public Relations
Dr. W. O. (Bill) Beazley, assist-
ant to the president of Hardin-
Simmons, has been elected as the
director of public relations by
the executive committee of the
board of Trustees. Beazley will
continue as assistant to the presi-
dent in addition to the new post.
This position was vacated by
Frank Junell Jan. 1, who also
served as financial vice president
of the university.
Dr. Beazley will now have speci-
fic jurdisdiction over the uni-
versity's relations with the public,
the Baptist churches which sup-
port the school, and the super-

tract was the first long term one
ever offered at Hardin-Simmons.
Baugh, 40, was one of the lead-
ing passers in professional foot-
ball during his 16 years with the
Washington Redskins. He was an
All American back at TCU from
which he graduated in 1937.
He went to Hardin-Simmons as
an associate coach following the
1952 season with Washington.
Baugh has divided his time since
then between H-SU and his ranch
at Rotan, Texas, 60 miles north-
west of Abilene.
Rev. Sterling L. Price ex-
pressed to Baugh the fact that he
was "the only man that could pro-
vide the football leadership need-
ed at H-SU." This was amened
by the rest of the officials.
