"Surprise Theme" For
Annual Banquet"4" & "9"s, Lawyers,
Seniors Honorees
The annual Ex-Students Ban-
quet to be held on Saturday even-
ing May 29, will have a "surprise
theme" according to Mrs. Bill'
Tippen, vice president directing
the banquet affairs.
Exes will have an element of
surprise awaiting them when they
arrive at the Rose Field House.
Derward Nollner, '38, chairman
of the decorations committee will
be in charge of transforming the
huge field house into a colorful
scene of fun, food and fellowship.
Other committee chairmen are:
Mrs. E. W. Ledbetter who will
head the menu committee, Mrs.
Billie Lacy in charge of registra-
tion and welcome committees.
George Hine will see that adequate
publicity is given the banquet. Bill
Tippen is chairman of the Pro-
gram committee.
Exes of the Law profession will
be one of the honored groups this
year. Classes ending in "4" and
"9" will be given special recog-
nition and the graduating seniors
of 1954 will be the guests of the
Ex-Students Association.
Dr. Evan Allerd Reiff who has
been the president of the Univer-
sity for one year will be the
speaker of the evening.

Worth, was recently elected pres-
ident of the Texas Baptist Stu-
dent Union at the state BSU spring
planning conference at Latham
Springs Baptist encampment.
Kliever, a ministerial student,
served this school year as presi-
dent of the BSU at Hardin-Sim-
mons. BSU president for H-SU
in 1954-55 is Kenneth Wright,
junior from Midland.
Approximately 35 H-SU stu-
dents attended the annual meet-

Two Exes Get
Doctorates
John Ben Shepperd, Texas At-
torney General, will speak at the
Hardin-Simmons University com-
mencement exercises, Dr. Evan
Allard Reiff has announced.
The commencement exercises
will be held May 31 in the First
Baptist Church at 10 a. m.
Shepperd is one of the young-
est members of the Texas exec-
utive family. A native of Glade-
water, he is past president of the
United States Junior Chamber of
Commerce and served two years
as secretary of state before beingHigh School Day
Draws From100 Communities
Approximately 1,000 high school
seniors from West Texas and
Eastern New Mexico attended the
Hardin-Simmons University sen-
ior day activities Saturday, April
24, according to W. C. Ribble,
general director of the program.
The annual event is for the pur-
pose of acquainting high school
students of the area with the
functions of H-SU, Ribble stated.
Ribble is dean of the Division of
Business Administration at H-SU
and is professor of economics and
sociology.
A musical program, tours of
dormitories and class buildings,
a barbecue lunch and a rodeo
were included in the day's free
entertainment.
Co-directors of the H-SU high
school day were Robert Walker,
president of the Student Assem-
bly; T. W. Dean, assistant dean
of the School of Music; and George
Hine, Jr., director of the Office
of Public Information.
In charge of open house for
men's dormitories was J. Leon
Marsh, assistant dean of students;
open house for women's dormi-
tories, Maude Emma King, dean
of women; tours of classroom
buildings and library, W. A.
Stephenson, assistant dean of the
University.

tending were Wright and other
officers for the coming year, 15
members of the Texas BSU choir
and other interested students.JOHN BEN SHEPPERD
elected to his present office. Re-
cently elected southern regional
conference chairman of the Na-
tional Association of Attorneys
General, Shepperd is also a
member of the Association's ex-
ecutive committee. He is a grad-
uate of the University of Texas
School of Law and holds two
honorary doctor of laws degrees,
from North Texas State College
and Chapman College of Los
Angeles.
He served in the Army in
World War II.
Dr. Elwin L. Skiles, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Abi-
lene, will deliver the baccalau-
reate address at Hardin-Simmons
University, May 30.
Graduation exercises will be
held in the First Baptist Church.
Dr. Skiles, who has held his
present pastorate since August of
1953, is a trustee of Hardin-Sim-
mons. He received his B.A. from
