Frank Johnson,Winters, D1'; Mrs. Haynie ---Letter From An Exe.Signs Of Wartimes
At Hardin-Sinmons
By GITA BUMPASS"
Evidences or war haven't been limited to
the battleground for a long time now. Out
Hardin-Simmons way nothing is. the same
-even thecannon has a new coat of paint
(but that's another story).
Wartime shortages prevail, and girls in
Mary Frances hall have put into practice
the old idea of every gal for herself. Most
recently was the case of hose vs. wearer,
concerning one industrious girl who hung
"out her wash between classes and completely
forgot it. The next day she went to the line
in the hall to gather it in and found --of
all things- her nylons had been worn!
Then there was the case of the disappear-
ing nylons that weren't brought back after
the initial wearing.
There is a young deferee who carries on
the nightly custom of peddling under the
assumed name of "Candyman.,, Calls now
made over the dormitory loud speakers to.
announce him are something like: "Candy-
man's here. Come and get your peanuts,
potato chips and sandwiches."
The most popular place on the campus is
located in one small end of the bookstore.
It is the biggest" struggle in wartime SUH
-the post office. Having as the theme
song, This Is Worth Fighting For, it
features letters written on V-Mail station-
ery, and the big envelope from Uncle Sam
that never fails to bring a long, drawn-
out groan.
With the ever-important shortage of man-
power (from the beau standpoint) service
songs such as the Army Air Corps, Anchors
Aweigh, and the Field Artillery song are
first on the HSU hit 1aradb.
The old Hardin-Simmons institution of.
catching rides is most definitely on the way
out. Mr. and Mrs. Abilene no longer give
pick-ups to the just-as-broke-as-ever college
kid. They leave him to wait for the delay-
ed city bus that just rolls proudly by, over-
loaded.
There is no such word as "ex-empted"
any longer-it's just "deferred." And
Hardin-Simmons like all other universities.
has gone all-out.
