St. Louib Mo March G. Advices
from East Tennessee says a party of
mounted desperadoes headed by the
notorious Clabe Watson Leo Watson
Bill Turner and Judson Bell attacked
the camps of Hay S. Rivcrnao railway
contractors at work near O umberland
Gap Wednesday. Tho ruffians wcro
drunk and armed with Winchesters and
Colt's revolvers. They first overran
the commissary department ate or
destroyed all the provisions and then
went to a shanty ocoupied by negro
laborers and beat several of them near-
ly to death. By this time Hays and
liivenao had gathered a number of
their men together and opened firo on
the desperadoes A pitched battle
took place in which Judson Bell and
Lee Watson were mortally wounded
and the rest of the cans driven away.
Next day tho railroaders with Officers
Ingram and Canan raided Yellow
Creek and captured the desperate out-
law Andy Watson who has terrorized
Bell county for years. He was take a
to Pinevillojail. There are several in-
diotments for murder against him. The
railroad men have thoroughly armed
themselves and say if the Kentuoky
authorities will back them they will
rid the Yellow Creek region of all the
villainous outlaws that overrun it.

Dmmraer Verana Cowboy.
Cheyenne Wyo March 7. A
drummer has killed a cowboy and tho
old settler swears the country is deteri-
orating Tho story is quite romantic.
About thrco months ago Widow Mc-
Coal the prettiest littlo woman in the
territury became agent for the stage
company at Dry Cheyenne station be-
tween Douglas and Buffalo. Her
handsome features and winning ways
soon captured a cowboy named Mead
and the two wore to havo been marri-
ed this month Last week James Kidd
a traveler for an Omaha mercantile
house appeared upon the seen and fell
desperately in lovo with tho Widow
who Jforsook her first lovo and returned
that of the traveling man. Mead sulk-
ed biding his time. Tuesday night
there was a dance at Stage Station.
Kidd's attentions to Mrs. McCoal were
very marked and Mead became terri
bly enraged lie insulted ana struck
the drummer in tbe face. The widow
twitted her new lover tor cowardice
when he took courses and drawing a
revolver fired at Mead. In an instant
a dozen pistols were belching fire. Sov
oral men fell wounded but the war
continued until Ed Cook Mead's part
ner was killed by a shot-through tho
head. There were cries of "Lynch
tho drummer" but Kidd bad gained
couraso. and backing toward tho door
with tbe widow as a shield he defied
the crowd. Mounting a horse ho fled
leaving the baffled cowboys wild with
rage Kidd and Mrs. McCoal soon
reached a station on tho Wyoming
Central and took a train east. On
reaching Chaldton Neb they were
married Sheriff MoMains is now in
pursuit of Kidd and his bride.

San Antonio Tex. March 8
White finna annear to be lurkinc around
the city somewhere and within the last
weok soveral reputable citizens nave
received warning and threatening epis-
tles through the mails written In red
ink with skdll and cross bones acorn-
paniments. To-day Mr. D. Quarao.a
well-known merchant tailor on Com
merce street received the following
notice uatoa tne tu inst. :
'fMr. D. Ouario : We. the commit
tee of White Caps do hereby give you
notice to mena your ways auu aiwou

WAsiiiNOTON.March 8.- The crowds
are thinning out and the city is left to
the office-seeker. Thoro aro more re-
publican congressmen in tho city to-
day than at any time sinoe the session
begun. They are all pulling for their
favorite supporters. Everything is in
confusion. The appointing powers are
overwhelmed with the spoilsmen but
tho president boars the attack with
good humor and gracious patienoe. He
will make tho factions settle their-ow
differences. Nearly every republican
congressman in Washington called at
the White House to-day. The famous
Web Flanagan with his quintette
phrase 'What are wo here for" called.
He has his eye on Minister Hubbard's
place in Japan but it is dollars to
rents that no won't roach it nor any
other man from Texas.
Fred .Grant will probably go tj
China as minister. A very olern
sweap would not make room for the
candidates now on hand. Thoy would
fill the places a number of times over.
There are bo many men of this
stamp that there appears very little
chance for tho lesser lights to secure
any of tho higher honors. These of
course are not among the throng of
candidates who aro running about in
their own interests.
New xorK politicians wore busy at
the mansion to-day. Vioe-President
Morton and Senator Hiscock called or
tho president bright and early end the
conferonco was lengthy and earnest.
At its close tho two visitors left with
pleased expressions on their features
that could not be concealed. Their
visit in connection with a knowledge
of tho fact that Flatt had beea re-
quested by the president to come down
Irom New York to talk over the Fed-
eral patronage in that state made it
tolerably certain as to what was being
dono and there is now but little rea-
son for doubting that Mr. Flatt can if
ho so desires' be colleotor of the port
of New York. Mr. Flatt left New
York this morning at 10 o'clock and
his arrival at the White House is look-
ed for momentarily. Warner Miller
strolled putte White Hoase this
moraing. but satisfied hiswelf wiUi
gazing at it and the crowd which was
on its front. Ho did not enter.
