circumstances and with the greatest ef
fort succeeded in climbing up tho 00
point at noon to-day and then struck
exhausted.
The rapid striking of tho fire alarm
bell ten minutes before 12 o'clock
brought a crowd to the engino house.
It was caused in testing ono of tho
alarm boxes.
Policeman Knott discovered a huge
six shooter prowling the street last
night and a small boy attached to it
and arretted the same taking tho kid
along as a witness.
Cold weather to-day and lollowed by
cloudy warm and possibly rainy weather
to-morrow Friday or Saturday is this
morning the prediction of the Wash-
ington weather sharps at Washington.
Saint Valentine's day whioh falls on
the 14th of February as usual this

Waco ought to get up something it

The reporter of this paper coming
down town this morning saw tho
fiarting of a gentleman and a bright
ittle girl his daughter; tho one going to
business the other going to school.

said" and tho little maid replied
laughingly "be a good boy Papa."
The reporter tipped his hat a little fur-
ther on the right side of his head and
got to wondering. Forty or fifty
years ago tho advice of -tho father
would have been all right. It was all
right as it was but the admonition of
tho girl was right too and may be it
was needed. Tho old generation a'int
none too good. On that a man'may bet

manufactory In Waoo Is highly grati-
fying and more convincing than
theory.
The annual report of the state com-
missioner of agriculture insurance
statistics and hlstery gives the popu-
lation of McLennan county at 38001
against 20007 in 1880 a gain of 12007
in eight years. It gives Waco a popu-
lation of 18000 whioh the late addi-
tion to the area of the olty will In-
crease to 20000. The present tax-
atlblo value or the county is $15087-
800 $1105909 of which ' la railroad
property. The population of the
county as to sexes 20430 are males1
and 17571 females being an excess of
2859 females over males.
All tho machinery of the police
court was in order this morning the
stern majesty of the law sat enthroned
on the mayor's bench and the fiery pen
ot tho secretary jumped about on the
table in eagerness to record the awful
sentences of the goddess of justice
whoso pervading presence mates even
tho dingy police court a saored and
awe inspiring place. But the machin-
ery creaked and stopped with a jerk.
The pen after a spurt dropped from
the hand and tho judicial sternness
faded from the brow of tho mayor
while justice adjusting her panier with
a little pat of tho hand crdpt off to
tho corridors and fell asleep. Only
One 'prisoner and that for a simple
drunk.

A very quiet but nice wedding took
place yesterday at the neat little Ger-
rran church on Eighth street at 2
p. m. The parties united wero Mr.
Wm. Fisher proprietor of tho Star
Bakery and Miss Jennie Korb of Gid-
dings Texas Bev. Mr. Lenktat pas
tor of the church officiating. Mr.
Fisher is an excellent industrious and
thriving gentleman and the brido qne
of tho pretty girls of Giddings of ex-
cellent' family and a very lovely per-
son. They wijl reside in Waco where
Mr. Fisher has lived four years
has a firm business and a hoBt of
friends who will join heartily with the

Sold Her Cow.
Accidentally about three o'clock
this afternoon a reporter ot tho News
heard Mr. J. I. Cash auctioneer rat-
tling a bell on the square and pro-
claiming a sale of cattle at the city
pound which is on 2nd and Franklin
streets. The reporter a little ouriuus
as to the modus operandi of soiling tlw
property ot citizens hurried down
there stopping only to get a cigar bot
tho aalo had begun beforo he .could
reach the -pound the auctioneer be-
ing on horseback and-he on foot. The
following sales w6ro made a very few
persons being there. -

The animals brought .as much at
they were worth if not more. On in
quiry as to where notices of sale were
given it was found that written no-
tices were posted up somewhere and on
inquiry of tho uewnaticr official organ
it whs found that the foroed sales of
this speoies of property is not adver-
tised in the official organ. One or
moro of the animals belonged to a
widow lady a very estimable lady and
ono deprivod of her husband by a ca-
tastrophe whioh won the sympathy and
tears of tho town at tho time it hap-
poned since whiob ahe has with wo
manly pluck striven hard to support
