SUNDAY IN WACO.
Rev. John Sloan's Maiden Sermon
A Farewell Discourse.
Sunday's services in the Waco
churches were unusually interesting
and the attendance generally large.
At the Fifth Street Methodist church
a large congregation gathered to hear
the farewell sermon of Rev. Horace
Bishop who has discharged for two
years past the duties of this pastorate.
His sermon was pathetic eloquent
and impressive and was listened to
with closest attention by every one of
the large congregation. His farewell i
words touched his hearers deeply lor
Mr. Bishop has won for himself dur-
ing his pastorate in Waco the high-
est resDect and admiration. He
goes from Waco to the Georgetown
district
In the evening Dr. F. T. Mithell de-
livered an able sermon dwelling upon
the pride a people should take in the
right upbuilding of a town and the en-
couragement of proper institutions
and enterprises.
St. Paul's Episcopal church ivas
visited by large congregations both
lor morning and evening services
Owing to continued disability of the
rector Rev. W. W Dellart was unable
to fill his pulpit and Rev. John
Sloan who was on the preceding
Sabbath ordained deacon by Bishop
Gregg conducted the services mak-
ing his maiden sermon since his or-
dination. It was arable and schol-
arly discourse delivered without the
aid of notes or manuscript and was
listened to with marked attention by
the entire congregation. A large bi-
ble class has been organized under
the direction of Mr. Sloan which is
increasing with each Sabbath.
Bev. B. H. Carroll of the First
Baptist church Rev. J. M. Halscll of
the Cumberland Presbyterian and
Rev. S. A. King of the Austin Street
Presbyterian churches all preached to
goodly congregations while the other
churches were also well attended.

Just before the clock struck eleven
last night an alarm ol fire was sounded
which roused the people and called
out the firemen to learn thai the stable
and barn ofS. J. Smihat 1504 Aus-
tin street were ablaze. The
location of the fire was
almost at the western limits of the
city and the fire apparatus after a tire-
some pull reached the scene too late
to do aught except protect surround
ing propeity The tired and cxluus-
ted firemen climbed to the top of the
long hill to gate : helpless upon the
scene of ruin. 1 he barn and con-
tents were a total loss amounting to
nearly $600 Mr. Smith had a number
of machines stored in the barn and on
these he had an insurance of $300.

Something Good.
The New Orleans Picayune says!
The Goodyear Cook & Dillon's Min-
strels opened at the Avenue Theatre
last nightandgave.a splendid perform-
ance presenting an entirely new pro-
gramme. This troupe is a large one
and makes a finer street parade with
light overcoats and white silk hats
than hab been seen here this season.
On the stage the troupe is what it
claims to be a company of refined
minstrels. The singing is good the
witticism comparatively tresh and the
olio of specialties above the average
John Thorn is a great juggler. The
Leech Brothers dancing and singing
to their own instrumental accompani-
ments are fine. Other features ex-
cellent. At The Garland to-morrow night.
Tickets are now on sale.
For a good clean and satisfactory
shave go to Mark Flournoy 's New Mc-
Clellnnd Barber Shop.
Help for Deserving People.
The board of associated charities aids
families almost exclusively and very
material nid it is. As soon as tho agent
of the society starts out lie makes in-
quiries in rcliablo circles ns to the
habits nnd characteristics of tho peoplo
applying nbout tho head of the
family if ono exists nbout tho chil-
dren how many if any aro nt work
and if they bingly and collectively
aro honest and industrious en if they
would bo industrious if they had tho
opnoi tuuity. Tho society naturally
will want to know nbout tho revenue
of tho family and of their expenses and
debts nnd if these answers nro nil
right his report to the board will bo n
favorable one nnd in n f-hort time the
necessaries of lile usually Hour meal
coal and wood in Lulls will bo forth-
coming. It does tako time however
to do this and if tho family were in
distress and needed immediate aid
there aro several individual means by
which they might tide over their wonts
temporarily.
This is ouo form of charity which if
it is slow is certainly suro and bub-
stnntial once it is secured. It takes
care exclusively of thoso who havo
lodgings who live in tenements some-
where in the city nnd receive charity
in that way. Theso aro usually very
deserving peoplo and their histories
aro often sad aud pathetic. Thoso who
aro invariably tho most deserving of
charity aro always tho most reluctant
about asking for it. Poor but proud
they will often sell every piece of fur-
niture nnd household effects that somo-
times havo tender nftd nloasant recnl.
lections in oitlcr to keep tho wolf from
