The IleiiiibllcmiH in the .South
It is said that the Republicans will
make an effort to carry Alabama and
that their State Executive Committee
has mapped out an active campaign
for that entire State. In view of their
overwhelming defeat in all the South-
ern States this year and particularly
in Alabama this is highly improbable.
If the republicans open the campaign
"JJTt S IS
propose it will be either a bluff with
?. i5j-Ks;H
ment anu prouuee uiiucuities it possi- j
ble; or they have an idea it will help
them in their congressional fight.
it is quite evident that it is the Con-
gressmen they are realty after. Theie
is no chance with the electoral votes
of the Southern States but there are
a number of congressional districts
that are close and doubtful: and the
Republicans can be counted on this
year to try all of them. It is now
quite evident that they will have a
candidate in every district in the
South where there is the slightest
chance of success and that they will
exert themselves to the utmost success.
The lower House of Congress is as
much their aim as the Presidency it-
self since with the Senate it will give
them control of the legislature; and it
is in the South that they see the best
chance or an active canvass.
It is the dange that the Southern
Democrats have to provive against.
