Kansas City Aug. 22. Isaac
Speckter a very wealthy Jew clothier
who runs anjestabhshment in the West
Bottoms fattally wounded his wife this
morning about 2 o'clock while shoot-
ing at a supposed burglar. The
woman will die. Mrs. Speckter was
sitting in the kitchen nursing a child
3 months of age which had been res-
tless during the night. She noticed
the screen door leading into the store
room moving to and fro and cried
out to her husband that there were
burglars in the store. The husband
was sound asleep on the bd in the
rear room and startled by her cries
he snatched a pistol from beneath his
pillow and fired. He was evidently
dazed and not fully awake as the ball
annual report of C. W. Macune
the business manager of the alliance
exchange. The report was referred
to a committee consisting of one
member from each congressional dis-
trict for investigation. The committee
is considering the matter to-night. It
is charged that the report is doctored.
The committee is receiving testimony
from all the reputable sources it can
concerning the business methods of
Macune. The election of officers will
take place Friday.

A Silly Suleldlet.
Texarkana Aug. 22. A man was
found dead this morning near the
Kizer plaining mills in the southern
suburbs of the city. He was appar-
ently about 30 years old and decently
clad He had in his possession a
pawn ticket in the name of W. B.
Savage which called for a watch at a
well known pawnbroker's here. In a
memorandum book found on his per-
son was written disconnected senten-
ces to the effect that he had taken
morphine and laudanum. The fol-
lowing is an extract from the memo-
randum book:
"By G ain't I hard to kill!
Twenty grains of morphine 25 cents
worth of laudanum and 25 cents worth
of laudanum again and still not dead.
My name ain't Savage. My
dad is worth $50000. Give my
watch to him and my pony to Lizzie
Scott the only girl I ever loved."

Nashville road leading to New Orleans
and to Montgomery was flooded dur
ing the night and no trains have
since passed over the road. The
wires are down in every direction
and it is impossible to learn the ex-
tent oi the damage to the railroads.
Plnea for Home.
Peru Ind.Aug. 22. A very strange
request is made by Mrs. Elizabeth
Taylor of this city who is awaiting
death's call from a tumor In the
stomach. She is a native of France
and is very desirous that she be taken
there for burial but upon being as-
sured that this could not be done she
has made her daughter promise that
he will havo her heart taken out her
hands and feet amputated and sent
to Franoe and buried at her child
hood's home.
The Deadly River.
Sealey Tex. Aug. 22. A party
composed of Mrs. F. Mellville
Nana Pettis Mattie Harvey and
Lettie Lane went to .the Brazos river
to take a boat-ride and bathing.
While in bathing Miss Lettie Lane
was carried away in the current and
went down. Miss Mattie Haivey
undertook to save Miss Lane and she
went down. Mrs. Mellville went to
the rescue of both and went down
also. Miss Nana Pettis went to
their rescue in the boat they were
riding in and succeeded in rescuing
Mrs. Mellville who is now in a criti-
cal condition. Miss jMattie Harvey
and Lettie Lane were drowned. The
body of Miss Lane has not up to 9. p.m.
been found. Miss Mattie Harvey's
remains were brought home to her
heart broken mother. A large party
of gentlemen went out to drat the
river for Miss Lane. The entire patty
are of the best families in Sealey.
'A FATAF CYCLONE.
Farmers Alliance.
Fort Worth Aug. 22. The second
day of the Farmers' Alliance legisla-
ture was consumed' in reading the

Jackson Miss. Aug. 22. A terri-
fic hurricane preva led last night be-
low here being the heaviest from the
Louisana line on the Illinois Central
Railroad and increasing in violence
toward the coast. All the telegraph
lines to New Orleans are down and
the railroad is under water at Pass
Mauchoc for five miles blown from
Lake Pontchartrain.
A Cyclone Struck Ntellpond. Kent

Baltimore Aug. 22. A large build-
ing occupied as a canning establish-
ment by Black & Krops Baltimore
was struck and completely demolish-
ed. About 100 men women and
children were at work in the building
and nine were killed outright three
dangerously hurt and a number slightly
injured by falling timbers. The storm
demolished many houses and barns
and swept clean all orchards in the
vicinity. Dwellings crushed like egg
shells A man named Willis was fa-
tally injury.

Jacksonville Fla. August 22.
There have been nine new cases of
fever 'during the last twentv-four
hours. There have been no deaths
for thirty-six hours and none of the
patients now under treatment are re
ported dangerously ill.
Drowned In the Braaoe.
Sealey Tex. Aug. 22. Misses
Lottie Lane and Mattie Harvey
members of prominent families here
while bathing in the Brazos river this
evening were drowned

Gadson Ala. Aug. 21. The cap
tain of the Etowah Rifles has iust
sent twenty-six guns and 100 rounds
of cartridges to Round Mountain
Ala. where a band of desperate white
men have declared war on the negro
employes and managers of the Round
Mountain furnace. The sheriff of
Cherokee county was sent for to-day 1
to quell the disturbance and he has
gone to Round Mountain with 100
men well armed. The white men
swear the negro laborers shall not re-
turn to work. The furnace has been
out of blast a week on account of the
disturbance which has been growing
worse every day. The men have
sworn to kill Manager Elliott of the
furnace company if it takes them a
year. A bloody conflict with the sher-
iff i posse is almost certain to occur.
A Burglar sbt.
Houston Tex. Aug. 22. At 10:45
o'clock last night a man attempted to
burglarize the residence of Frank
Adams in the fifth ward. John Don
nelly a brother in-law of Adams
hearing a noise arose and saw a man
endeavoring to scale the fence. He
immediately fired at the rascal with a
double-barreled shotgun. The man
fell and cried. "Oh God he has killed
me." Although it is presumed the
man was badly wounded he escaped
it is thought by the assistance of
friends.
Heavy itains In Tenaaaaee.
Memphis Tenn. Aug. 22. Heavy
rains have fallen all over this section
of country during the past three days
and still continue. All the small
streams especially to the south are
bank full and in many localities have
overflowed and flooded valuable farm
ing lands. Telegraph wires between
Memphis and New Orleans have been
prostrated and only very meager
news can be obtained.
