taken place in the Cubifas

The sky was perfectly clear

of the sun's corona was the
same as in the eclipses of 1SS6
and 1S96. The corona extend-
ed oyer two diameters from
the sun and its greatest extent
was along the sun's equator.
Photographs were obtained on
a scale' of 4-5 inch the sun's
diameter and also on the scale
of 1-10 inch to get the corona

LUETGERT ON THE
WITNESS STAND.
Alleged Wife-Murderer Wept
While Making His '
Defense.
Chicago HI. January 22.
Adolph L. Luetgert went on
the witness stand today and
told to the jury the story of the
doings in his sausage factory
on the night of May 1 last.
He endeavored to explain
the mystery surrounding the
disappearance of his wife for
whose rr'irder he is being tried.
After relating the story of
the various financial deals in
which he was interested Luet-
gert was asked if during the
time he was first engaged in
business he was married. To
this Luetgert replied in the af-
firmative. "I was married to Miss Pau-
line Ruelke in 1872" said the
defendant.
Attorney Harmon of coun
sel for the defense then went
into Luetp-ert's financial affairs
at the time of Mrs. Louisa
Luetgert's disappearance and
drew out the statement that
Luetgert was worth aboutgo-
ooo executive of real estate.
Attorney Harmon then asked
Luetgert when his first wife
died.
"In November 1S77."
"And how long were you a
widower?"
"Until the next year in
January."
At this point Luetgert broke
down and commenced crying
like a child. Seeing the con-
dition of his client Attorney
Harmon asked for a recess
but Judge Gary refused to al-
low it. After a few moments
Luetgert regained control of
himself.
"Before yuo were married
where did you and your little
boy Arnold live?" was the next
question. mi
"I slept at the store and my
boy at the house of my mother-in-law'
"When were you married
the second time?" Luetgert
was asked by his counsel.
"In 1 87S to .Louise Bick-
1
nese.
There was not a trace of
emotion in the voice of Luet-
eert as he mentioned the name
of the woman he is charged
with having murdered. The
defendant then told of the
various places at which he and
his wife had lived and of his
ofcinof into business at his
latest location in 1879.
MORE MISSIONARY
TROUBLES.
Chinese Now Attacking Pro-
testants as Well as-
Catholics. Berlin January 22. From
k?fo7Fnation which- has- rearrliec1
the foreign office it appears
that the German missionary
troubles in China are becom-
ing widespread and are leading-
to new complications be-
tween the two governments.
1 he Protestants as well as the
Catholics have been attacked.
Reports received by the Berlin
Evangelical Mission society
show a critical state of affairs
existing-.
Murderous attacks
have been made on three of
its stations.
An exchange would not be
wealthy for it says: "The
way ot the millionaire is hard.
After wearing- out his life.
hardening his heart to the con-
sistency of flint in the accumu-
lation of immense wealth he
then worries himself to death
trying to hold it and escape
the bombs of cranks. He fi-
nally goes to the devil with no
more goods than a pauper
while grave robbers steal his
body and bogus widows and
unknown relatives bob t.p all
over the land to claim the mil-
lions that he has left behind."
