Members of That Body Visit San Angelo
on Special Tram Are Shown the
City are Dined and Other
wise Entertained
The membors of tho State Press
Association of Texas arrived in
San Angelo on a special train
Saturday morning shortly after
ten o'clock. They cntno from
Browmvood whore their regular
annual meoting had been hold
and woro looking for enlighten-
ment as to tho conditions and op-
portunities existing in this good
western world of ours. They were
tho puests of the people of Sun
Angelo through the kindly fore-
sight of Mr. Will II. Mayes of
the Browmvood Bulletin which
gentleman accompanied thorn
saw that their every want was
supplied and took the encomiums
heaped upon him with gruco and
ease.
Tho Business Club of this city
had prepared for their reception
and entertainment and the pro-
gram as carried out was novel to
mauy of the visitors and full of
enjoyment for them all.
Messrs. .1. B Murrah and V. I.
Woyland representing tho Busi-
ness Club mot tho editors in
Browmvood and accompanied
them to thiB city. They were
met at the train by a large num-
ber of tho leading citizens of .San
Angelo and a number of ladies.
Privato conveyances were await-
ing tho arrival of tho train uud
the visitors were taken charge of
by tho committeo on reception
introduced to aud driven over tho
city by San Angelo's citizens.
Boat rides were taken on Lake
Concho the Texas Mule School
gavo performances "Boogher
Red" Privett gave three exhibi-
tions of broncho busting' and at
twelve o'clock John Hull dived
from tho Main Concho bridge
twice. All this occurred at or
noar Lake Concho.
After theso features of tho en-
tertainment wero concluded the
visitors wero drivon to tho court
Iioubo in tho district court room
of which dinner was served by the
ladies of tho Presbyterian and
Methodist churches.
Mr. R. A. Hall cashier of the
San Angelo National Bank was
toastmaster on this occasion and
at tho conclusion of the ropast in

Honey Grove Signal and newly
electod presidont of the Texas
Press Association. Tho talk was
a characteristic ono of Mr. Low-
ry's and was well takou and en-
thusiastically applauded by vis-
itors ai"1 home-folks as well.
M" j. G. Murphy of tho San
Angelo Standard was then called
upon for a talk and introduced in
turn Mr. 0. II. Tupnor associate
editor of tho woekly and daily
Standard. Mr. Tuppors's effort
was brilliant and well recoived.
Mr. S. J. Thomas editor of tho
Comanche Chief and retiring
president of tho Texas Press
Association rospondod to Mr
Tuppor's speech. Mr. Thomas is
witty and clever and his talk was
enjoyed by all. Hon. A. Jones
of this city followed with a bril-
liant portrayal of tho advantages
of West Toxos in business and
sooial i'eaturos as seen by a now
comer Mr. Jones himsolf hav-
ing resided in this city for only a
short leugth of timo.
Mr. B. B. Herbert of Chicago
was then called for and in a very
appropriate manner responded to
tho words of wolcomo givon by
his predecessors. Mr. Herbert is
editor of tho National Printers
Journalist of Chicago and was
tho founder of the rational Edi
torial Association organized at
Now Orleans in 18S5 which body
today is perhaps tho most impor-
tant organization of its kind in
tho world. Mr. Herbert's words
caino from the heart and the
many kindly things he said of
San Angelo and her people will
be ch rished for some time to
como. Mr. C. B. Metcalfe then
made a short characteristic
speech well punctuated with
humor and recoived with up
plnusB.
Col. A. J. Baker then intro-
duced Miss Adina DeZavala of
San Antonio and presented her
with a bunch of sweet peas a
token of the appreciation of her
visit by the ladies of San Angelo.
Miss DeZavala is perhaps one tho
most noted women in Texas.
Her literary writings have earned
famed for her within and without
the State. Her patriotic efforts
in behalf of the saving of the
Alamo and tho fact that she ia
president of tho "Daughters of
the Republic" have earned her
the regard of all of tho pooplo of
tho state and that of thousands
throughout tho nation.
Miss DeZavala in a nice little
speech thanked tho ladies for
their remembrance and added u
few wordB for the appreciation
generally felt by all tho visitors.
Tho visitors wore then returned
to tho train and left about 8:20

Mauricio Mata a peacoful Mex-
ican citizen who runs a black-
smith shop in tho southwestern
port of tho city was stabbed in
the loft breast Saturday after-
noon about 11:00 o'clock Iiib

Tho cut is noar tho loft nipple
and althoug a serious wound ho
will probablv recover.
Tho difllculty arose in a Mexi-
can chili joint where the man who
did tho cutting came to raise a
"rough house." Mata took tho
part of peaco maker and was in-
terfering with tho bad homhre's
plans whon ho was stabbed with a
knife us noted above.
The assailant's name is left out
as ho is still at lurge but officers
howover havo their man "spot-
ted" aud hopo to have him in
custody before long. Dr. Batts
attonded tho wounded man and
reports him doing nicely.
