A Triple Qeam Searchlight.
For life in lighthou.es a new form
of combination searchlight has been
designed and constructed in 15erlin.
This throws three beams of light at
the siuiiu time from the top of the
tower. This Siomons-Schuckert
searchlight has thieo arc lights re-
flecting mirrors and projector regu-
lating devices 120 degrees nimrl all
operated nutoinaticnlly. 'i ho car-
bons of the arc lamps nrc fed auto-
matically and electric motors are
used for turning tho three senrch-
lights while a fourth searchlight is
mounted upon the top this working
entirely independently of tho other
three and moving in any direction
desired. This new form of electric
flash light has been installed in tho
lighthouse tower nt Helgoland.
The three searchlights mounted
on tho lower revolving platform 10
degrees apart have mirrors twenty-
nine inches in diameter. The pint-
form revolves at the rale of four
revolutions per minute. Cassier's

J. Picrpont Morgan and John V.

was doing somo remnrkably heavy

is recalling it just now with much
interest.
"Mr. Gates I wish you wouldn't

when a waiter approached to take
his order. Tho waiter smiled at
Mr. MncDonough and said: "You
don't remember me do you? I
used to sing in one of your com-imnies."
"I remember you very well" said
Mr. MncDonough.
"Aro you surprised to see mo here

"Not a bit" replied the librettist
cheerfully. "You know I have
heard you sing."

How Carlo Learned to Take Care ot
the Home Chickens.
Carlo early manifested a love for
watching and chasing chickens a
pnstiine not to bo neglected with
the small opportunities of the city.
Wo coon by kindness and firmness
nnd much talking broke him of
disturbing our own chickens. We
often took a lilllo chick in our
hands nnd said to him "Pretty
chicky Curio's clueky" and nllow
cd him to lick it gently. Soon it
wos not only safe but safer to have
him in the pen with the chicks than
otherwise ns then no rat or mouso
dared venture there. From the first
Carlo hns deemed thee marauders
worthy of death whenever and
wherever seen nnd acts out his con-
victions. As the chicks grew their
number was reduced to twelve and
these woro transferred to the barn.
Fvory night for two years Carlo
made n dolour of the parches giv-
ing each fowl a good lick they
were so acquainted it did' not alarm
them nt all and if one or more of
the number were absent he would
immediately scour llje promises un-
til it was found then give a pecul-
iar bark indicating the discovery
nor would ho gio it up till the
number was complete. Could he
count? How did he know there
should bo just twelve no more no
less? Mary K. Holmes in Science.

Broomstick Balance.
This is n fine game for n rainy
evening. You need a clothes basket
nnd a broomstick. Pass the broom-
stick through tho hnndles of your
clothes basket nnd raise tho ends of
the broomstick on a couplo of chair
seats that face each other. Seo thnt
the basket swings freely on the
broomstick. Now on the front cor-
ner of tho chairs place a coin four
in nil. Then got somo ono to step
inside the basket and sit astride
the stick and using a cane try to
knock off the four coins on tho
chairs nnd then step to tho ground
ngain. Now this seems very easy
to do but just try to do it and you
will seo your mistnke. It is not very
dillicult to get into tho basket nnd
to sent yourself on tho broomstick
but after thnt is when your real
trouble begins.
