Story of o Mohawk Indian.
There is a remarkable story
current among the Cn n -o with
regard to Li Hung Chung's an-
cestry. According to this leg'
end it was during tho days of
sailing communication botweeu
America and tho Celestial king
dom tiiat a Chinaman laudod iu
Western America. Ho was
known as An Li and claim
ed lineal descent from a celebra-
ted writer who llouriohcd about
1000 years before Chriht named
Li Ling. Ah Li got among an
unknown tribe of Indians in the
West He became a member of
tho Inbound was identified with
thorn for many years taking
part in many of their htiulHtr
expeditions in luct Ah Li so
distinguished himsolf in the
chase that the tribe raised no
objections when he offorod to
wed a maiden of the tribe.
Tlio young people were united
and. following the tribal custom
lived in a soparato wigwam.
Thoro was an absence of feast-
ing. Tho European idea of wed-
t'ing feasts was as yet unknown
to the Indians. In a subsequent
hunting expedition Ah Li was
one of the party. During his
absence tho expected happened
it was a boy. A great feast of
honor was prepared for tho
father's return It must bo un-
derstood that Ah Li -))ko tho
Inn yuugo of his vife'.s people.
At tho qroat feast he told the
peoplo about tho great country
across tlio salt wator which ho
would liko to take r.is wife and
child to seo. The little boy grow
to boa favorite in tho camp to
tho day his paronts left the tribe
for China. Tho wife died in
China.
Tho son visitod his Indian
relations once. Ho becamoa
very useful man and took a
leading part in Chinese public
affairs. Tho Chinese contention
is that this hulf-breod is Li Hung
Chang's grandfather. Thoro
are many plausible incidents in
support of this curious family
history. In Chinese literuturo
the matter is said to bo histori-
cal. Now York Doc. 80. Jeffries
and Shurkoy wore mutohod this
evening to fight any time bo-
tween March 17 and April 80
1002. Tho match is at 20 rounds.
Marquis of Queonbury rules to

letic club ot San Fruucisco
James C. Konnody representing

Billy Dolanney who is Jeffries
manager mot Tom Shurkoy and
his manager Barnoy Reich this
afternoon hero Dolaney said
that ho was anxious to iuduce
Bob Fitzsirnmons to meet the
champion once moro and ho
hud given him duo notice of his
whereabouts but neither Fitz
sitnmons nor any representative
of his put in any appearenco.
So Delanoy clinched tho bar-
gain with Sharkey.
Thoro Is just a possibility that
the mon will not moot and that
is tlio chanco that Shurkoy may
be defeated by Potor Muhor In
their bout in Philudelphla in tho
third week In Junuary. Tho
bout will bo doclarod off should
Shurkoy succumb to Muhor.

Emporor will novor leave until
his soldiers uro driven out. On
account of tho rigid instructions
aguiusl iutorvlows it is impossi-

this represents tlio sentiment.
Thoro is moro than u littlo sup-
prossod excitement in army und
navy circlos on account of tho
prospect of Germany landing
sailors to collect monoy duo tho
Emporor. Tho conviction is
strong in tho navy that Germany
has a chip on hor shoulder and
is waiting for the Uuited States

undoubtedly is ainod from tho
intercourse of American officers
with the Gormima on sou and

Love
It boundless. Yet It is utterly helpless
to give strength to the child born with n
low vitality. The time to give strength
to Uie child is before birth and to impart
thii gift the mother hemclf must be
strong. When the mother is weak and
nervous dreading the coming time of
her trial she impresses her feelings on
the little life linked to iter own. When
the baby comes it is fretful and nervous
marring nil the joy of motherhood by its
restlessness and wailing.
Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription gives
strength to mothers. It preserves tliem

a healthy body and a happy disposition. It given strength to nursing tnotnera

other narcotics.
A Beautiful Daby.
"I consider Dr. Pierce's Pavorltc Prescription the best medicine made" writes
Mrs. Mary Munlock of aw Taylor St. Topcka Kansas. nI know it has no equal.
I am the mother of ten children and only one living the tenth one. She is one
year old nnd is as well and hearty as can be. She la a beauty. Oi my other babiea
sonic were born at right time but dead others were premature births; one lived to
be one year old but she was always feeble. I tried different doctors but none of
them could tell what my trouble was. I was examined by surgeons but they found
nothing wrong I did not know what to do so I thought this last time I would
try Dr. Pierce's Kavorllc Prescription. I took it during the endre nine months
tad now have a Cue baby girl and I cannot prulse your medicine enough."

Stop the
Blight
It is a sad thing to sec fine
fruit trees spoiled by the blight.
You can always tell them from
the rest. They never do well
afterwards but stay small and
sickly.
It is worse to see a blight
strike children. Good health
is the natural right of children.
But some of them don't get
their rights. While the rest
row big and strong one stays
small and weak.
Scott's Emulsion can stop
tat blight. There is no
u-ason why such a child should
slay small. Scott's Emulsion
is a medicine with lots of
strength in it the kind of
strength that makes things
grow.
Scott'.i Emulsion makes
children grow makes them cat
makes them sleep makes them
play. Give the weak child a
chance. Scott's Emulsion will
make it catch up
with the rest.

Chicago III . Doc. 30. To
what straits tho llvo stock pro-
ducers of tho country woro and
aro being put by tho scarcity of
feed is reviewed in tho market
lottor of Goorgo H. Phillips
published today. He recites
the odd condition of wheat being
bought in the great markots and
shippod to Kansas and South-
western slates and estimated
that ot least 100000000 bu. wcro
disposed of for stockfeeding.
Vmongotherthingshesays: "It
Is thought that the final Gov-
ernment roport which will bo
published next week will show
that this country raised u crop
of wheat this year of about 700-
000.000 bu; if so it will meau tho
Urgest norp on record of which
60 per cent is winter wheat.
Tho most remarkable thing of
this is that tho scarcity and
urgent demand for winter wheat
all over the country is tho real
cause of tho advance during tho-
past week. Tho greatest scarci-
ty and most urgont demand is
from the very sections where
tho largest crop was supposed
to have been raised and this
makes it all tho more difficult to
comprehond what has becomoof
tho wheat unless it is takon for
grunted that it has been fed on a
larger scalo than anyono
imagined. Under date of Oct.
26 I estimated that it would bo
fully 100.000.000 bu. and this is
being quite genorally accoptcd
now as boiug tho case but bo-
iforo anothor crop is raised I
now believe it will amount to
oven more than this.
